For the first time in history, you can fly nonstop from the U.S. to the Faroe Islands.

Atlantic Airways — the islands’ flag carrier — is launching a seasonal service from New York-Stewart (SWF) this summer.

“This is something we have been working hard on for quite some time and we are extremely excited about being able to announce this new historic route connecting the Faroe Islands and the U.S.,” said Jóhanna à Bergi, CEO at Atlantic Airways.

Here are the details of this historic new route to Vágar Airport (FAE) in the Faroe Islands.

Fly Nonstop Between New York and the Faroe Islands

Never heard of the Faroe Islands? You’re not alone. The Faroe Islands is a tiny autonomous territory of Denmark comprising 18 islands. Furthermore, it’s located only 200 miles off the coast of Scotland.

The self-governing archipelago has never before had a nonstop connection with the U.S. — that is, until the arrival of Atlantic Airways.

The carrier’s new seasonal service will run from just August 22, 2023, through October 4, 2023. However, the new route will surely open up a small window of new adventure and exploration possibilities from New York’s Stewart airport.

Operating just once weekly for 7 weeks; the airline will head to the Faroe Islands on Wednesdays and back to New York on Tuesdays. The schedule is planned as follows:

  • Depart New York Stewart (SWF) 10:45 a.m. — Arrive Vagar (FAE) 10:05 p.m.
  • Depart Vagar (FAE) 4:30 p.m. — Arrive New York Stewart (SWF) 6:50 p.m.

Contrary to the vast majority of flights heading East across the Atlantic as red-eyes, Atlantic Airways’ service to Vagar will be a daytime flight, which can help in some way to reduce the effects of jetlag.

“We are confident of the demand between the U.S. and the Faroe Islands,” said Bergi.

How to Book

Don’t let the fact that flights operate just once per week put you off from visiting. You can always fly Atlantic Airways one-way. Then, you can enjoy a shorter trip by routing via Keflavik (KEF) in Iceland in the opposite direction.

Hopping onboard an Atlantic Airways flight to the Faroe Islands on one of the airline’s all-economy Airbus A320neos will set you back from $895 round-trip. The fares include a checked bag, too!

Bottom Line:

New York-Stewart (SWF) is no stranger to welcoming quirky routes and airlines given its appeal as a cheaper alternative to New York’s larger and more expensive alternatives at JFK and Newark.

Final Thoughts

Atlantic Airways’ new seasonal service from New York-Stewart to the Faroe Islands is about as niche as it gets. However, the airline is confident that the demand is there. Here’s to hoping they’re right, and this fun new route sticks around for good!
