Themed rooms aren’t just a great way to make a hotel stand out: They also help ensure your vacation is memorable. From fairy tales to the 50s era, there are themed hotel rooms to suit every taste and style.

While the U.S. is home to many remarkable hotels, a select few take creativity to the next level. Here are some standout features of our 10 favorite most unusual and imaginative themed hotels across the country.

How To Book

Most of these hotels are available for booking through Expedia or Hotels.com, both of which are part of the One Key loyalty program. As a member, you can earn OneKeyCash, a unified rewards currency, on bookings made through Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo.

Members earn 2% in OneKeyCash for every dollar spent — excluding taxes and fees — on hotels, vacation rentals, activities, packages, car rentals, and cruises. For flights, however, the earning rate is lower at 0.2% per dollar spent. OneKeyCash can then be redeemed at checkout on any of the 3 participating platforms, providing added savings and flexibility.

To maximize your rewards potential, consider paying for bookings with a travel credit card. For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® earns 3x Ultimate Rewards points on travel purchases — or even 10x points if the hotel is booked through the Chase Travel portal (though OneKeyCash wouldn’t be earned in this case).

Adventure Suites in New Hampshire is the perfect place to go if you enjoy fantasy and make-believe. Each of the hotel’s 19 suites has a different fun theme and backstory to dive into.

Some of the rooms can even sleep up to 18 people, making this an optimal spot for group trips. The Haunted Castle is the largest suite on the property and the most famous, though it’s a ghost-themed room that can be scary for some guests.

Others include the Roman Rendezvous, which is themed after the Roman Empire, the Dragon’s Lair, and the Log Cabin. If you prefer a more subtle theme, consider booking the NY Penthouse, which has the least decor.

Add-ons are also available, ranging from standard early check-in to more unique packages like the “Great Impressions,” which includes candles, a bubble bath, a box of chocolates, and more.

Every room has amenities, such as access to the hotel’s continental breakfast, in-room air conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. However, other elements vary depending on the suite. For example, some rooms are split between 2 levels, while others have an in-room hot tub.

Black Swan’s unique rooms have made the inn a local favorite for weekend getaways and celebrations.

3. Capitol Reef Resort in Torrey, Utah

Starting Nightly Rate: $156

Capitol Reef Resort in Utah offers a few different overnight experiences for guests. The entire hotel is decorated with a Western theme. However, while some rooms simply have natural wood and Western-patterned curtains, others take the theme to a new level.

Guests can spend the night in a Conestoga Wagon or TeePee for a more authentically Western experience. The wagons are the most rustic lodging on the property and are only open seasonally, as they can’t be properly heated when the weather gets colder.

Capitol Reef’s TeePee rooms, on the other hand, offer a more “glamping” style experience. They’re open seasonally between May and October, but they have a television and a private bathroom.

There are also Western cabins available. The Superior and Traditional Rooms and the King Suites are the least themed options at the hotel.

4. The Dive Motel in Nashville, Tennessee

Starting Nightly Rate: $173

The Dive Motel in Nashville doesn’t limit its themed decor to its rooms. The entire hotel is decorated in a vintage style inspired by the 1970s. However, its rooms are the star of the show. Each of the 23 rooms at the motel follows 1 of 6 different general styles.

King Pool is the most popular since it’s one of the larger standard rooms. However, the decor is more subtle. They’re also conveniently located near the pool deck.

Other themes include the Cabin Kings, which is mostly nature-inspired; the Double Queens, which sleeps 2 and is disco-inspired; and the Honeymoon Suite is a little more psychedelic in its decor.

Amenities offered by the motel include access to the bar and lounge, in-room minibars, a hot tub, and a pool. Every room also has a switch-activated mirror ball to bring the ’70s theme to life.

5. Don Q Inn in Dodgeville, Wisconsin

Don Q Inn

Starting Nightly Rate: $84

Don Q Inn is a Midwestern favorite when it comes to themed hotels. Though the inn has standard hotel rooms that are more traditionally decorated, the suites are all unique and themed.

There are 2 suite categories. The Original Theme Suites feature copper or hydro-therapy tubs. These 7 rooms have themes varying from Viking to medieval-themed decor. Though, in general, they’re a bit more subtle.

Don Q Inn’s fantasy suites are larger and include an in-room whirlpool. The themes of these rooms are also more elaborate, ranging from the Roman Caesar’s Court to the space-inspired Tranquility Base.

Many of the fantasy rooms only have 1 bed, however. So be sure to check if you’re traveling with multiple people, as you might have to book multiple rooms if everyone wants to experience the hotel’s unique decor.

6. Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando in Orlando, Florida

Starting Nightly Rate: $528

While all the Hard Rock Hotels offer guests a chance to stay in suites themed to their favorite musicians, the one in Orlando is extra special. The Future Rock Star Suite in the Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando has recently entered a new era honoring the current Queen of Pop, Taylor Swift.

The room is designed for families, with 2 bedrooms for privacy. However, any Swiftie can live their dreams and book a stay here. In fact, it’s perfect for concertgoers since up to 5 people can stay overnight in this suite.

There’s even an in-room stage for guests to sing along to their favorite songs and pretend they’re performing for fans of their own. Most of the Taylor Swift decor is in the “child’s room.” The rest of the suite has decor nods to other music legends, like John Lennon. This is notably the most-themed room in the hotel.

7. Hicksville Pines in Idyllwild-Pine Cove, California

Starting Nightly Rate: $161

Hicksville Pines might be a small hotel with just 10 rooms, but it’s unforgettable and a local favorite. That’s in large part thanks to its unique decor. Each room on the property is one-of-a-kind and has a different theme.

Some options, like Christmas Town and the 420 Room are in an A-frame building, while others, like The Haunted Mansion and the Third Man, are located in separate trailers for extra privacy.

Though these rooms are fun and unique, it’s worth noting that guests have to be at least 21 years old to stay here most of the time. Family-friendly weeks are hosted, though. Dogs are welcome in all of the property’s rooms.

While each room has slightly different amenities, all guests get access to a free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, the grill house, the arcade, and the outdoor hot tub.

8. Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, California

Madonna Inn

Starting Nightly Rate: $203

The Madonna Inn on California’s Central Coast has become a beloved statewide institution. Since 1958, it has welcomed guests in 110 themed rooms. Surprisingly, despite the large number of accommodations, every room is different, which adds to the inn’s charm.

The suites are divided into 13 categories to suit a variety of travel needs. Some rooms, like the Italy and the San Francisco, are themed after places, while others embody a more concrete concept, like antique cars or cavemen. For the true Madonna Inn experience, book one of the rock wall rooms.

These rooms have entire walls made of rock, rock floors, and even a rock shower. However, these rooms can make guests feel like they’re inside a mountain, which can be overwhelming for claustrophobic visitors.

Madonna Inn also has amenities to make your stay more comfortable, like the fitness center and live music.

9. The Roxbury in Roxbury, New York

The Roxbury

Starting Nightly Rate: $175

Tucked away in the Catskills, the Roxbury has been delighting guests with its themed rooms for over 2 decades. There are multiple lodging options, ranging from studios to suites, each of which is uniquely decorated to fit a different theme.

Some of the decor is a little more subtle, like the Classic Contemporary rooms that each focus on a bold color or print. Others are much more immersive.

More common themes, like Fred’s Lair, looks like a caveman dwelling, can be found on the property. However, others are much more unique. For example, Maryann’s Coconut Cream Pie makes guests feel like they’re literally staying in a room made of a giant dessert.

Wicked fans will love the Wizard’s Emeralds, which is themed after the Emerald City in “The Wizard of Oz” stories and, of course, the beloved musical.

10. The Victorian Mansion in Los Alamos, California

Starting Nightly Rate: $277

Built in 1864, the Victorian Mansion at Los Alamos would be a unique experience even if the rooms were decorated in a standard way. However, the inn has curated an even more unique experience by theming each of its suites.

The Hobbit Hole is a favorite among fantasy fans, and it’s been meticulously designed to look like it’s straight from the movies. The 50’s Suite, instead, taps into the nostalgia of the Rock ‘n Roll, diner, and drive-in era.

Keep in mind that amenities vary from one room to another. For example, some rooms have an outdoor patio or private balcony, while others have a hot tub for guests to use.

There are only 8 rooms at the Victorian Mansion, so space is limited, and it’s a popular lodging option. Be sure to book your room in advance to make sure you get the suite you want.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a hotel that’s unique, fun, and unforgettable, the U.S. has no shortage of options. Whether you’re traveling with a jungle safari fan or are trying to live out your fairy tale dreams, there’s a room or hotel out there to suit your tastes.

With any luck, this list has helped inspire you to book your own stay at a themed hotel. All you have to do now is make the tough decision of picking which one you want to stay at first.
