My Strategy for Booking Cathay Pacific Business Class Using Points

Cathay Pacific has long been considered one of the best airlines in the world, known for its incredible premium cabin products, in-flight dining, onboard service, and extensive route network.

Unsurprisingly, its business class is highly sought after in the points-and-miles world and has become increasingly more difficult to book. However, it is not impossible. With the right transferable rewards currencies, some patience, and a bit of luck, you can still book Cathay Pacific business class with points.

Here’s a look at what makes Cathay Pacific business class so special, along with the exact strategy I used to book it.

What Makes Cathay Pacific Business Class Special

Thanks to its premium cabin experience and extensive route network, Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific consistently ranks among the world’s best airlines. It doesn’t offer the flashiest product, but it offers a truly refined experience in all the details that actually matter.

Here’s a look at the Cathay Pacific business class experience.

Private Seats With Direct Aisle Access

Cathay Pacific’s long-haul fleet consists of the Boeing 777-300ER, Airbus A350-900, and Airbus A350-1000. Although the seats can vary slightly between aircraft, you can expect direct aisle access thanks to the 1-2-1 configuration.

The business class cabins are arranged in a reverse herringbone layout, with seats angled away from the aisle for slightly more privacy.

Although Cathay Pacific’s older seats lack closable doors, they still offer plenty of privacy, primarily thanks to the business class seat’s shell design.

Of course, each Cathay Pacific business class seat fully reclines into a bed, measuring roughly 82 inches long. 

Cathay Pacific also has a distinct new business class product, dubbed the Aria Suite. Cathay Pacific is gradually rolling out the new Aria Suite across its fleet, but it is currently available on only a few Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

These new Aria Suites are entirely new products, featuring enhanced perks like sliding doors, higher shells for increased privacy, 24-inch 4K screens, Bluetooth audio connectivity, wireless charging, and adjustable lighting fixtures.

Elevated Onboard Dining

Cathay Pacific also offers remarkable onboard dining, particularly in its premium cabins. The airline consistently ranks alongside ANA, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and Emirates for inflight dining quality.

While Cathay Pacific isn’t known for flashy meal preparations, it does provide balanced, restaurant-style meals with a variety of Asian and Western dishes. Cathay Pacific also allows business class passengers to preselect their meals prior to departure.

Consistently Excellent Service

Cathay Pacific’s cabin crew service is another standout feature. Across multiple flights with the airline, the crews have been consistently proactive, attentive, and highly professional.

The service strikes a balance between polished and not overly formal, which makes a real difference on long-haul journeys. More than anything, the crew genuinely goes the extra mile to ensure passengers have a well-rounded experience.

How To Book Cathay Pacific Business Class With Points

Booking Cathay Pacific business class requires flexibility and the right strategy, as award availability can be competitive. Here’s exactly how I did it.

Step 1: Choose the Right Loyalty Program

The first step is deciding which miles to use, which depends on your existing balances, the transferable points you can access, and which option delivers the best overall value.

Generally speaking, the best way to book Cathay Pacific business class is through Cathay’s own loyalty program: Cathay Pacific Cathay. It uses a distance-based award chart and tends to release more availability to members of its own frequent flyer program.

Since Cathay Pacific is also part of the Oneworld alliance, you can book its business class awards with several different frequent flyer programs, including:

• Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards
• American Airlines AAdvantage
• British Airways Club
• Japan Airlines Mileage Bank

However, pricing and availability vary significantly between programs.

Step 2: Search for Cathay Pacific Award Availability

After deciding which program to use, the next step is finding award availability. Fortunately, Cathay Pacific has a relatively intuitive search engine, making it easier to find award space.

You’ll need to log in to your account to search. While partner searches can be more complicated, Cathay’s own program typically offers the best combination of availability and pricing.

Once you’re logged in, you can search for award space by clicking “Redeem flight award.” You’ll see Cathay’s calendar view, which shows available reward seats.

Alternatively, you can use an award search tool, making the process easier than ever. One of my favorite tools (that also searches Cathay Pacific) is Roame, or Roame.travel.

Step 3: Transfer Rewards Points

After confirming award space, the next step is to transfer flexible rewards currencies to the airline loyalty program, which in this case is Cathay Pacific itself.

Cathay Pacific is a 1:1 transfer partner of Capital One miles, Bilt Rewards, and Citi ThankYou Rewards. American Express Membership Rewards points also transfer to Cathay Pacific, but at a 5:4 ratio.

You can also transfer Marriott Bonvoy points at a 3:1 rate, and each 60,000-point transfer includes a 5,000-mile bonus.

This is where transferable credit card currencies become especially valuable. Cards that earn Capital One miles, such as the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card, allow transfers to Cathay Pacific.

This generous bonus could yield around 80,000 Capital One miles (after meeting the minimum spending requirement), which is almost enough for a one-way business class redemption between the Western U.S. and Hong Kong (HKG).

Having access to transferable currencies like Capital One miles or American Express Membership Rewards points makes booking more sought-after products far more achievable.

Step 4: Complete the Booking

Once your miles are in your Cathay Pacific account, booking is pretty straightforward.

For example, you can book Cathay Pacific business class between Los Angeles (LAX) and Hong Kong for 88,000 Cathay miles, plus taxes and fees.

Taxes and fees are slightly higher than some other programs, but still reasonable compared to many other premium international redemptions. After confirming pricing and passenger details, complete the booking online.

Final Thoughts

Cathay Pacific is one of the best airlines in the world, with a tremendous business class product to match. While it can be a bit difficult to book this seat using points and miles, it’s certainly not impossible.
