Devaluation alert! British Airways recently confirmed that Avios award prices would increase on December 15, 2025.

That means that the Avios in your account today can book fewer flights than they could yesterday, and you’ll also pay more in cash to cover taxes and fees. If you’ve been stockpiling points for a big redemption, we hope you booked something before today.

Let’s take a look at the details.

BA Avios Devaluation

British Airways recently announced that starting today, December 15, 2025, the price of award flights on British Airways and airline partners would increase. This price hike will hit both the Avios and cash parts of future fares.

This devaluation comes on the heels of broader changes made to the program throughout 2025, including a rebranding of the British Airways Club and adjustments to how elite status is earned, moving to a revenue-based concept.

At the time of the announcement, BA gave only a few examples of what the new prices will look like, showing off-peak examples with increases of about 10% in Avios costs, plus more in surcharges.

British Airways said that these award price increases are needed as a result of “increasing Air Passenger Duty and third-party charges, as well as changing market conditions and ongoing inflation.”

What You Should Do Now

If you were looking to redeem British Airways Avios for a future flight, the original announcement came with our advice to book something before December 15, 2025, to lock in the previous award prices.

BA has stated that if you need to make changes to an existing award flight after December 15, you can retain the original rate as long as the destination, cabin, and seasonality remain unchanged. However, if you didn’t book anything yet, you’ll now pay the higher award costs.

This is an excellent reminder that devaluations are a constant factor in the points and miles world, making it more important than ever to fine-tune your spending and earning strategies in order to maximize your Avios.

Final Thoughts

British Airways recently announced a devaluation of Avios, and it took effect today, December 15, 2025. Travelers can expect at least a 10% increase in cost for award flights on BA and its partners, in addition to increased surcharges — based on the limited examples BA provided at the time of the announcement.

This serves as a great reminder to earn and burn your points and miles, as they can be devalued at any time.

We’ll be digging into the new award pricing to see what exactly changed, and we’ll give you updates as we learn the full picture.
