British Airways is making it harder for its frequent flyers to earn elite status, with higher Tier Point requirements for Silver and Gold membership. These changes will take effect on April 1, 2027, giving members time to prepare.

The changes mean members of The British Airways Club will need to earn more points to unlock some of the airline’s most valuable travel perks.

Here’s everything you need to know about these significant changes and what they mean for British Airways travelers.

British Airways Raises Threshold for Silver and Gold Status

Last year, British Airways made significant changes to how members of its loyalty program, The British Airways Club, earn elite status. Now it looks like they are back at it again.

Beginning on April 1, 2027, British Airways will increase the annual Tier Point requirements for two of its primary elite membership levels. Silver status will require 8,000 Tier Points, up from 7,500, and Gold status will require 21,000 Tier Points, up from 20,000.

Bronze status will remain unchanged and will still require 3,500 Tier Points, however. The existing flight-based qualification routes will also stay unchanged, with Bronze status available after 25 eligible flights and Silver after 50.

The timing of this is interesting. British Airways actually made it easier to earn status with its British Airways Club loyalty program overhaul last year. With the changes, British Airways replaced its traditional distance-based approach with one that places greater emphasis on eligible spending. Members generally earn Tier Points based on qualifying spending, with additional opportunities and bonuses under specific offers.

From April 1, they will need to earn more without getting any additional benefits.

Hot Tip:

While elite status is becoming more difficult to attain, British Airways Avios are still quite valuable. Check out our in-depth guide on the best ways to redeem British Airways Avios for maximum value.

What This Means for British Airways Travelers

For British Airways passengers looking to earn Silver or Gold elite status, the path just got a bit harder. While a 500-point increase for Silver status and a 1,000-point increase for Gold status may seem minor, it represents roughly a 6.7% and 5% increase.

For many British Airways customers, Silver status is particularly appealing, as it includes benefits such as business class lounge access when eligible, priority check-in and boarding, and additional baggage allowances on qualifying journeys.

Meanwhile, Gold status offers a higher level of recognition, including access to more premium lounges and other benefits. Members will need to do more to earn the same status, but without getting any additional benefits beyond those available now.

Final Thoughts

British Airways has once again made it harder to earn elite status. Beginning on April 1, 2027, The British Airways Club loyalty program members will need to earn more Tier Points to earn Silver and Gold elite status.

This latest change reinforces a growing challenge for many frequent flyers: Loyalty status is becoming increasingly expensive to maintain. For travelers, this move sends a clear message to review their qualification strategy now, because it’s only going to get harder.
