Why We Like This Card

The Chase Freedom Unlimited® is easily one of the best cash-back credit cards on the market. When paired with other Chase cards in the Ultimate Rewards family, you can transfer that cash back into points if you wish – making it one of the most lucrative cards in your wallet.

Chase Ultimate Rewards

The Freedom Unlimited card is arguably one of Chase’s most popular credit cards. It’s the introductory card in the bank’s portfolio, allowing you to earn rewards on all purchases:

  • 5% cash-back on travel purchased through Chase Travel
  • 3% cash-back on drugstore purchases and dining at restaurants
  • 1.5% on all other purchases

Even better, new card applicants are now eligible for an elevated welcome offer of $250 upon meeting the minimum spend requirements. The bonus cash-back will be awarded within a few billing cycles.

Freedom Unlimited Card Welcome Bonus History

Chase has changed up the welcome offer on the Freedom Unlimited card many times over the years, but this $250 bonus is arguably the best we’ve seen. Based on the Freedom Unlimited card’s welcome bonus offer history, you’ll see this is the largest amount of rewards you can earn in a one-lump sum.

For example, Chase most recently had a different welcome offer that granted an extra 1.5% cash back on all purchases for the first year, up to $20,000 spent — potentially worth up to $300. While that could yield more in rewards in the long run, it requires a hefty $20,000 in annual spending to maximize.

Bottom Line:

Ultimately, the current $250 bonus is clearly the easier win, requiring just $500 in spending within the first 3 months to qualify.

Pair the Freedom Unlimited Card With Other Chase Credit Cards

The welcome offer becomes even more valuable when paired with other Chase credit cards. By combining the Freedom Unlimited card with Chase’s top travel cards — the Chase Sapphire Preferred card, Chase Sapphire Reserve card, or Ink Business Preferred cardyou can convert your cash-back rewards into Ultimate Rewards points instantly for travel redemptions.

These points can then be transferred to airline and hotel loyalty programs like Southwest Rapid Rewards, United MileagePlus, and World of Hyatt. The redemption value will vary, but it’s very common for travelers to find more value when redeeming Ultimate Rewards points this way.

On the flip side, you also get the benefit of redeeming points at an enhanced rate through the Chase Travel portal. On its own, the Freedom Unlimited card offers rewards worth a standard 1 cent per point when booking through Chase Travel.

However, if you also hold the Chase Sapphire Preferred card or Ink Business Preferred card, your points increase in value by 25%, making them worth 1.25 cents each. With the premium Chase Sapphire Reserve card, that value jumps to 1.5 cents per point, maximizing your travel rewards.

Final Thoughts

The elevated $250 offer, equivalent to 25,000 Ultimate Rewards points, makes the Freedom Unlimited card an easy choice. But beyond the welcome bonus offer, it’s a valuable card to keep long-term. With a $0 annual fee and a well-rounded rewards structure, it can help you maximize your points potential on everyday spending.
