Citi just made the eligibility rules for its Strata cards much stricter.

The old 48-month waiting period between bonuses is gone. In its place is language suggesting that you can earn the welcome bonus on each Strata card only once in your lifetime. This new language is showing on application pages for the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card, Citi Strata Premier® Card, and the Citi Strata℠ Card.

Here’s what we know (and what we don’t) about this recent change.

What Changed in the Application Terms?

Until now, Citi‘s Strata cards followed the issuer’s standard 48-month rule. If you hadn’t earned a new-account welcome bonus on that specific card in the past 4 years, you were eligible again. The old language spelled it out:

“Bonus ThankYou® Points are not available if you received a new account bonus for a Citi Premier® or Citi Strata Premier® account in the past 48 months…”

-Previous application terms

The updated terms drop the timeframe entirely:

“New account bonus offer is not available if you currently have or previously had a Citi Strata Premier® or a Citi Premier® account. You also may not be eligible for the new account bonus offer based on a number of factors, such as your history of opening, closing and using credit cards.”

-New application terms on the Citi Strata Premier card

The Citi Strata Premier card isn’t alone in this change, as similar terms now show on application pages for the Citi Strata Elite card and Citi Strata card.

That means if you’ve ever held one of these cards (or the old Citi Premier that predates the Strata rebrand), the welcome bonus appears to be off the table. That vague “number of factors” clause also gives Citi extra room to deny an application on its own terms. For what it’s worth, this change appears limited to the Strata family for now. Citi’s AAdvantage cards still carry the 48-month language word-for-word.

What ‘Lifetime’ Actually Means Is Anyone’s Guess

But these terms aren’t as clear as they seem. Card issuers often use the phrase “once per lifetime” without enforcing it literally.

Amex is the usual reference point. Its “once per lifetime” language has been on the books for years, and reader datapoints put the real waiting period between welcome offers at roughly 5 to 7 years, depending on the card and your history with the issuer.

Chase is trickier because it doesn’t publish a blanket lifetime rule the way Amex does. Where lifetime-style language appears on specific Chase offers, reported outcomes have been all over the map, from a few years to never again on the same product.

Citi hasn’t given us a number, and we shouldn’t expect one.

It’ll take months of fresh application datapoints being discussed online before anyone can say with confidence whether Citi means 5 years, 7 years, or truly forever. Until then, take the new terms at face value: If you’ve had a Citi Strata-branded card before, assume you’re locked out of the welcome offers on these cards.

Hot Tip:

Every issuer has its own rules for welcome bonus eligibility and credit card applications. See our guide to credit card application rules to learn more.

Final Thoughts

This is a clear downgrade for anyone who enjoyed earning repeat welcome bonuses on Citi’s ThankYou Points-earning cards every 4 years.

The silver lining is the fact that each Strata card is still a separate opportunity. That means a first-time applicant may still be able to earn all 3 bonuses across the Citi Strata Premier card, Citi Strata Elite card, and Citi Strata card.

If you’re eligible and have been considering one of these cards, it may be worth applying before Citi tightens the rules further.
