When Citi launched the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card, I viewed its up-to-$200 in annual Blacklane credits as a throwaway perk — something that sounded nice but probably wouldn’t offer me much real-world value.

I was wrong.

I’ve now had several opportunities to use the benefit, and it’s completely changed my opinion. While 2 rides went exactly as planned and another hit an unexpected snag, all of them left me with the same takeaway: Blacklane offers a noticeably more premium experience than Uber or Lyft.

Here’s how each ride went and why the Blacklane credit has become one of my favorite Citi Strata Elite card benefits.

For anyone unfamiliar, Blacklane isn’t another ride-share app. Instead, it’s a global chauffeur service where you book a professional driver in advance. Depending on your booking, you’re typically picked up in a luxury sedan or SUV by a chauffeur dressed professionally, rather than simply requesting the nearest available driver.

Because reservations are made ahead of time, you receive your driver’s information before your trip, including their name, vehicle, and contact information. You can also message your chauffeur directly to coordinate pickup details.

The pricing is generally higher than Uber or Lyft, but after applying the Citi Strata Elite card’s $100 semiannual credit, I’ve found the difference is often much smaller than I’d expected.

My 3 Experiences Using the Blacklane Credit

As I alluded to in the introduction, my 3 experiences with Blacklane were very different: 2 rides delivered the premium service I hoped for, while another fell apart after a lengthy flight delay. Here’s how each experience played out.

1. My Morning Ride to Fort Lauderdale Airport

My first chance to use the Blacklane credit came before an early-morning flight out of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL).

With my family of 5 traveling — and plenty of luggage — I booked my first Blacklane ride from our house to the airport. Although Blacklane assigned the specific vehicle, we ended up with a spacious Cadillac Escalade.

The day before departure, Blacklane shared my chauffeur’s details and information about the assigned vehicle. Then, early that morning, I received a text confirming that my driver was on the way, along with his phone number. Having those details in advance gave me far more confidence than opening my Uber app at 5 a.m. and hoping a nearby driver accepted the ride.

Our chauffeur arrived about 15 minutes early and waited patiently in the driveway without making us feel rushed. When we finally emerged from the house bleary-eyed and tired, he greeted us and helped load all our luggage into the spotless SUV.

From there, we settled in and relaxed during the roughly 20-minute drive to the airport. There were no hiccups, delays, or surprises — it was exactly the kind of smooth experience I wanted at that hour.

After applying the Blacklane credit, I paid only about $40 to $50 more than I would have likely paid for a comparable Uber ride. Considering the spacious vehicle, advanced confirmation, and more polished service, I thought the additional cost was well worth it.

2. Stress-Free Arrival in Barcelona With My Family

My second Blacklane ride showed me just how valuable this benefit can be when arriving in an unfamiliar city after a long flight.

My family had just landed at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN) following an overnight flight to Europe. We were exhausted, traveling with young children, and had several pieces of luggage. The last thing I wanted to do was navigate airport transportation or wait for a ride-share large enough to accommodate everyone and everything.

After we collected our bags, our Blacklane chauffeur was already waiting for us. He greeted us, helped with our luggage, and walked us to his vehicle before driving us directly to our hotel.

The ride cost €111, or approximately $127 at the time. After receiving the $100 Blacklane statement credit, my out-of-pocket cost was roughly $27.

I viewed it as an excellent value, considering I had someone monitoring our flight, waiting for us after baggage claim, and helping out with our luggage. The convenience removed a major source of stress from our arrival.

This was the ride that made me realize the Blacklane credit wasn’t just a perk that looked good on the card’s marketing bullet points. Used strategically, it could provide significant value, especially for family trips.

3. My Newark Pickup Didn’t Go as Planned

My third experience was almost the exact opposite of the first two.

After our family vacation in Mallorca, I arranged a Blacklane pickup from Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Unfortunately, United (and air traffic control!) caused a major disruption when our flight arrived roughly 6 hours late because of weather and staff shortages.

My original chauffeur understandably could no longer handle the pickup, so Blacklane attempted to assign another driver. However, because the delay kept changing, the reassignment process was confusing. When we finally landed in Newark, I discovered that there was no longer a confirmed chauffeur waiting for us.

It was disappointing. After a lengthy delay and a long flight, the last thing I wanted was another transportation problem. Rather than standing around at the airport trying to resolve it, I contacted Blacklane’s customer support chat. Within a short chat conversation, the company apologized, refunded the booking, and added a $150 Blacklane credit to my account for the inconvenience.

I ordered an Uber and continued to Manhattan. I was also able to retain the value of my Blacklane credit for a future booking, along with the additional $150 credit the company provided.

Obviously, I would have preferred the pickup to happen as planned. Still, I was impressed by how quickly Blacklane acknowledged the problem and made it right without requiring me to argue or repeatedly ask for compensation.

The ride itself may not have worked out, but Blacklane’s response reinforced my overall positive opinion of the service. That level of accountability isn’t something I’ve experienced often with traditional ride-share companies.

Why the Blacklane Credit Is More Valuable Than Expected

After using Blacklane 3 times, I’ve come to appreciate the credit far more than I did when I first applied for the Citi Strata Elite card and reviewed its benefits. I probably wouldn’t pay full price for a chauffeur service very often, but the credit makes it much easier to justify — especially when I’m traveling with young kids and plenty of luggage.

While my Newark pickup didn’t work out, my other 2 rides made an early-morning flight and an overnight red-eye arrival in Europe much easier. I was also impressed by how Blacklane handled the problem in Newark, which gave me even more confidence in using the service again. For me, the credit has gone from a benefit I wasn’t sure I’d use to one that offers genuine value.

Hot Tip:

Blacklane was most valuable for me when my family arrived in Barcelona, feeling exhausted from an overnight flight, with young kids and plenty of luggage. I’d recommend saving the credit for a similarly stressful travel day, when having a chauffeur waiting can make the biggest difference.

Final Thoughts

I’ll be the first to admit that I underestimated the annual credit benefit of up to $200 for Blacklane services on my Citi Strata Elite card. After using it multiple times, I’ve completely changed my mind.

While not every ride went perfectly smoothly, Blacklane’s customer service responded quickly and resolved any issues. Combined with the chauffeurs’ professionalism, solid communication, and a more personalized airport experience, it’s become a benefit I look forward to using. For anyone who regularly travels to or from the airport, especially with family, I think it’s one of the more underrated premium card perks available today.
