Citi is offering a promotion to save 10% when using your points to purchase gift cards from 9 brands, but is this a good use of your points?

Let’s take a look at the details to see if this offer makes sense.

Citi Gift Card Sale — Details

Through December 31, 2024, you can redeem 10% fewer Citi ThankYou Points toward gift cards from 14 brands. You can find the sale by logging into your ThankYou Points account and choosing Gift Cards on the redemption menu. Alternatively, you can navigate directly to the sale at this page.

While Citi offers gift cards for numerous brands, not all of them are on sale. Only these brands are on sale for 10% fewer points.

For example, MGM gift cards are available in this sale. Normally, points are worth 1 cent each toward gift cards, meaning a $25 gift card would require 2,500 ThankYou Points, and a $100 gift card would require 10,000 points. During this offer, however, you’ll need just 9,000 points for a $100 gift card or 2,250 points for a $25 gift card.

Gift cards are available in additional denominations, and you can find 10% discounts on those brands indicated with a SALE tag.

This offer is available to anyone with a credit card that earns ThankYou Points.

Bottom Line:

This promotion is available when paying for gift cards with your points. You’ll need 10% fewer points than normal.

Is It Worth It?

Redeeming 2,250 points for a $25 gift card provides a value of 1.11 cents. That’s well below our average value of Citi points at 1.6 cents apiece.

Why the discrepancy? There are numerous ways to redeem Citi ThankYou Points, including gift cards, paying for purchases when shopping online, and cashing them out. However, the best value comes from learning about and using Citi’s transfer partners.

While it requires more work, the potential value can’t be understated. Redeeming points for a flight that might cost hundreds or thousands of dollars provides exponentially more value than using points for gift cards — even during this sale.

However, if you’ve got a mountain of points, your travel plans are already booked for the next year, and you’re planning on buying some gift cards anyway, this sale could make sense. Otherwise, there are better ways to use your points.

Final Thoughts

Through the end of the year, you can redeem 10% fewer Citi ThankYou Points toward gift cards from several different brands. While this is an interesting sale, it won’t make sense for most people to use their points this way.
