Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio spans a wide range of hotel brands, offering something for every trip type and budget. I’ve stayed at most of these brands over the years.

But as a Titanium Elite member, I’ve found a particular Marriott Bonvoy brand particularly frustrating: City Express. The brand, which is largely in Latin America but is now expanding to the U.S., Canada, and Asia, offers great prices but not much else. Its elite benefits are essentially nonexistent, and earning rates are half those available at other Marriott hotel brands.

Here’s why City Express has become, in my experience, Marriott’s most frustrating hotel brand.

Where City Express Falls Short

The biggest issue is the earning structure. Most Marriott brands earn 10 base points per $1 spent, but City Express earns only 5. Elite night credits work the same way: A stay at most Marriott properties earns the standard credit (1 night stayed gets credit for 1 night), but City Express gives you half.

If you’re chasing status or trying to rack up points for a redemption, staying at City Express puts you at a real disadvantage compared to a stay at almost any other Marriott brand.

The rooms are very simple.

Then there’s the welcome gift situation. Marriott guarantees a welcome gift for Platinum, Titanium, and Ambassador Elite members across many hotel brands — usually a choice of points, food and beverage credits, or an amenity. City Express hotels in the U.S. and Canada offer a points option, but most of the brand’s footprint is in Mexico and other Latin American countries.

At those properties, there’s no guaranteed welcome gift. Show up as a Bonvoy elite at a Mexican City Express in Monterrey or Mérida, and you’ll get nothing on arrival. Marriott spells this out in the program terms, but it’s still a letdown compared with most other Marriott brand offers, which offer at least some free points at check-in.

Upgrades Can Be Even More Frustrating

This is where my experiences have been the most disappointing. Room upgrades aren’t excluded in Marriott’s terms for City Express — unlike some Marriott brands or locations, which have exceptions. Hoping for a room upgrade to a better category within the same room type, or maybe even a better room type? Those are supposed to be available, subject to availability, across the portfolio.

Yet while checking in at several City Express properties, I’ve asked about an upgrade and gotten some version of “you’re assigned to the room type you booked,” and not “we’re sold out” or “nothing’s available tonight” — just a flat-out rejection that doesn’t match what Marriott’s terms say.

Worse, elite status doesn’t seem to factor into room assignment at all. I’ve ended up in rooms next to the elevator or near a noisy school group’s block more than once. A little extra attention to room assignments would cost the hotel nothing and go a long way toward making elite members feel recognized.

Room closest to the elevator? Feels very elite.

Additionally, the condition of the properties is hit or miss. Standard City Express hotels can feel dated — worn furniture, tired carpet, bathrooms that need a refresh, and even stains in the hallways.

I’ve seen hallways like this one (in Saltillo, Mexico) at a few locations.

That’s not true across the entire portfolio, but it happens often enough that I don’t expect the same consistency I typically find at brands like Courtyard or Fairfield.

It’s Not All Bad

Despite my frustrations, there are some positives to City Express. The rates are the main selling point, and they really are cheap. In many secondary Mexican cities, a City Express costs $50 to $80 a night and still earns Marriott points and elite night credits, even at the reduced rate. For smaller towns where it might be the only Marriott (or only major chain bookable with points), that’s hard to argue with.

Complimentary breakfast is the other bright spot. It’s not a guaranteed Bonvoy benefit at this brand — you won’t find it listed in the terms — but in practice, most City Express properties in Latin America include breakfast for all guests, not just elites. It’s always a simple spread (eggs, fruit, pastries, and coffee), but it’s there every morning, and it’s free. That alone covers a meal and adds value for the price.

Some City Express brands are better than others. City Centro and City Express Plus locations tend to be newer, better maintained, and more thoughtfully designed. Rooms are still simple, but the finishes hold up.

There are still design quirks to watch for — finding strange shower setups with water spraying at the door or off-center toilet seats isn’t uncommon — but overall, these hotels are a noticeable upgrade to the base product.

Hot Tip:

My 4-night stay at the City Centro by Marriott Oaxaca was mostly positive and offered a contrast to the regular City Express properties.

Final Thoughts

City Express has its place. The rates are cheap, breakfast is usually included (even though it doesn’t have to be), and in some smaller Mexican cities, it’s the only place around to earn or redeem points. I’ll keep booking it when the trip calls for it.

However, it’s frustrating for a Marriott brand to offer half the earning rate, skip the welcome gift across most of its footprint, and fail to provide room upgrades that elite members are supposed to receive under the program’s own rules. For elite members, City Express is the brand where status does the least work, and that’s why I find it the most frustrating in the Bonvoy portfolio.
