Delta Air Lines is expanding its effort to capture air traffic growth in Austin with its first international flight from the Texas capital. Service to Cancun, Mexico, will begin later this year.

Let’s look at the details.

Delta’s Winter Service to Cancun

Delta has been expanding in Austin, and the latest addition is the new service to Cancun. The airline said in a statement it’s also adding more flights to Orlando this winter.

With these additional routes, Delta departures at Austin will be up more than 35% over the previous year. The airline will operate 60 peak departures per day at the airport this winter.

The new service from Austin-Bergstrom (AUS) to Cancun (CUN) will be a daily, seasonal flight. It will begin on December 20, 2025, and run until mid-April 2026. It will be flown with an Airbus A320 with 157 seats (16 in first class, 18 in extra-legroom Delta Comfort+, and 123 in economy.)

Delta will also increase service between Austin and Orlando (MCO) to twice daily during the peak winter travel season, offering a flight in the morning and another in the afternoon.

That’s in addition to twice-daily service to New Orleans (MSY) that started this week and a daily flight to Panama City, Florida (ECP) that will begin in March. To measure how much Delta is betting on growth in Austin, consider that it also recently announced new service to Jacksonville (JAX), Indianapolis (IND), and Memphis (MEM) beginning in May and San Francisco (SFO) and Tampa (TPA) beginning in June.

Southwest dominates traffic at Austin’s airport with a 43% share of passengers. American Airlines follows with 18%, and Delta is currently third with 14%, but that percentage appears destined to grow.

Delta also has a Sky Club lounge at the airport, which opened in 2019. That’s another indicator of how important Delta thinks Austin is in its network. It now has flights from there to all of its U.S. hubs, putting passengers originating from Austin just 1 stop away from Delta destinations worldwide.

Austinites now have a choice of major international carriers, too. British Airways flies nonstop to London, KLM to Amsterdam, and Lufthansa to Frankfurt.

Hot Tip:

Thinking of flying Delta more often? It may be useful to apply for a Delta co-branded credit card. Each card has a welcome offer of thousands of miles, and select cards give you a 15% discount on all Delta-operated award tickets that you book with your SkyMiles.

Final Thoughts

Delta is putting a lot of effort into growing its presence at the Austin airport. The airline has just announced a new flight to Cancun, its first international service from the Texas capital. This is all good news if you’re based in Austin.
