Delta Air Lines has delayed its new nonstop route between Atlanta (ATL) and Riyadh (AUH), which was going to start on October 23, 2026. The airline announced on October 12, after repeated attacks on the Saudi Arabian airport by the Yemen-based Houthi militia, that the launch of the new route will be postponed until March 2027.

Here’s what we know about the decision and about what happens to ticket holders on the canceled flights.

The Only Service to Saudi Arabia by a U.S. Airline Is Off

Delta issued a statement Monday morning saying it’s delaying the start of the new flight from Atlanta to Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, which was planned to begin on October 23, 2026. Delta was planning a daily service during the first week, from October 23 to 30, then decreasing service to 3 times weekly. The route was going to be operated by an Airbus A350-900, the flagship of Delta’s long-haul fleet.

That won’t happen, Delta said, citing “evolving developments in the region.” The decision comes after several deadly attacks on the airport by the Houthis, an Iranian-backed militia that’s currently fighting the Saudi military in the context of the wider conflict with Iran.

In the latest attack on Sunday, a missile struck the Riyadh airport, killing 12 people, including a U.S. citizen. Earlier in the week, another attack on RUH killed 3 people and destroyed a Saudia aircraft on the ground. The Houthis attacked other Saudi targets last week, including the Dammam (DAM) airport, about 900 miles from the Yemeni border.

As of mid-morning Eastern time on Monday, the Riyadh airport was closed, and flight-tracking site Flightradar24 showed airplanes skirting the capital’s airspace.

The Atlanta-Riyadh route would be the only service to Saudi Arabia flown by a U.S. airline. Flag carrier Saudia, a Delta partner in the Skyteam alliance, flies from several U.S. cities to Riyadh and Jeddah (JED). Its services to the latter city are still operating.

“The safety and security of our customers and employees always come first and continue to guide our operational decisions,” Delta said in its statement, which made no reference to the attacks. “We remain in close contact with relevant government and aviation partners, including Saudia and Riyadh Air, as we monitor the situation.”

According to Delta, the scrapping of the Riyadh flight is temporary. “Saudi Arabia remains an important market for Delta, and we are committed to serving the Kingdom for the long-term,” the statement said. “We look forward to connecting Saudi Arabia to Delta’s global network in March 2027.”

Delta and Riyadh Air’s Partnership on Hold

The flight was going to be the first instance of cooperation between Delta and Riyadh Air, a new Saudi airline owned by the government.

Riyadh Air is intended to supplement Saudia and challenge the domination of Emirati and Qatari airlines — Emirates, Etihad, and Qatar Airways — on the lucrative market for global connections via Middle Eastern airports. As the name implies, the government’s plan is to make the new airline the top carrier in Riyadh, while Saudia concentrates on Jeddah.

Delta reportedly received subsidies from the Saudi state to open the Riyadh route, which otherwise may not have been commercially viable. The plan to funnel Delta passengers via Riyadh, however, is now on hold for at least 6 months.

What Happens if You Booked the Riyadh Flight?

Delta invited customers to visit the My Trips section of its website to rebook. We found the route is bookable again from March 29, 2027. If you’re planning on visiting Riyadh in the coming weeks and months, you can rebook on partner itineraries — assuming, of course, the airport reopens. You can also get a full refund.

Hot Tip:

If you bought an award ticket, you can typically cancel and receive a full refund back to your account. Delta’s SkyMiles program, unlike some airline loyalty programs, also refunds the taxes and fees paid and doesn’t charge penalties for canceling an award ticket.

Final Thoughts

Delta has delayed the October 23 launch of its nonstop flight from Atlanta to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, announcing the postponement just 11 days before the planned start date.

A spate of deadly attacks by the Houthi militia on the Riyadh airport didn’t leave Delta much choice. The situation was clearly unsafe, and Delta has decided to push the route’s launch to next year. According to a check of the Delta site, the first date that appears bookable is March 29, 2027.

That new launch date also depends on whether the conflict in the Middle East will have abated by then.
