Delta’s innovative “Route Race” allowed SkyMiles members and its employees to select the carrier’s next European route. Only 1 route was meant to be chosen, but now Delta has shared that it will start nonstop service to 2 popular Mediterranean destinations — Malta and Sardinia — next summer.

Let’s take a look at these exciting new routes coming in 2026.

Delta Flyers and Employees Pick Malta and Sardinia as Next European Destinations

Delta recently asked its flyers and employees to vote on the airline’s next 2 European destinations, giving them a choice between Ibiza, Spain (IBZ), Malta (MLA), and Sardinia, Italy (OLB).

The contest lasted from August 25 to August 29, 2025, and drew nearly 150,000 participants. Ultimately, the preferences were split: SkyMiles members chose Sardinia, while Delta employees went with Malta.

Given the excitement of both destinations, the Atlanta-based carrier decided to launch nonstop service to both islands from New York (JFK), giving travelers double the options for Mediterranean escapes next summer.

Delta will start flying to Sardinia, Italy, on May 20, 2026, with 4x weekly service. The island is famous for its dramatic cliffs, turquoise waters, and rich cultural heritage, making it a perfect spot to unwind. Sardinia is also one of the world’s 5 Blue Zones, where people are known for living long, healthy lives thanks to good food, daily activity, and strong community ties — so it’s ideal if you’re looking for a mix of relaxation and authentic local experiences.

Flights to Malta, a gorgeous Mediterranean archipelago, kick off on June 7, 2026, with 3x weekly service. Between its UNESCO-listed capital, Valletta, ancient temples, and sparkling waters, the island is a dream for history buffs and beach lovers alike.

Hot Tip:

To celebrate these new routes, Delta is offering introductory fares starting at just $781 round-trip, and you can also redeem SkyMiles to book your flight. On both Sardinia and Malta flights, travelers can choose from 4 cabin experiences: Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+, and Delta Main Cabin. Delta One passengers get to enjoy lie-flat seats, premium dining, and more on their journey to these 2 exciting Mediterranean destinations.

Final Thoughts

Delta’s new nonstop flights to Sardinia and Malta open up destinations that have historically never had direct service from the U.S. — making it easier than ever to explore these Mediterranean gems.

Letting SkyMiles members and employees vote on Delta’s next European destinations was a cool concept — and one we hope other airlines take note of. It’s a fun way to get travelers involved and help bring routes they actually want to fly to fruition.
