Delta has been investing heavily in its onboard Wi-Fi and digital experience lately, and now it’s going a step further by teaming up with Amazon to power what’s next.

So what does that actually mean for you on board? Here’s what to know about Delta’s Wi-Fi plans starting in 2028.

What This Means for Delta Passengers

Delta Air Lines is partnering with Amazon to bring its new low Earth orbit satellite network, Amazon Leo, to hundreds of aircraft — with installations starting in 2028 and an initial rollout planned for 500 planes.

For passengers, this should mean faster, more reliable in-flight Wi-Fi — something you’ll appreciate whether you’re working, streaming, or staying connected at 33,000 feet. In line with Delta’s existing passenger perks, Leo-powered Wi-Fi will be free for all SkyMiles members.

This goes well beyond basic browsing or sending a quick iMessage. Delta is aiming for a fully connected experience — think streaming, uploading photos and videos in real time, sending work files mid-flight, and staying online from gate to gate. The idea is to make the onboard experience feel much closer to what you’re used to on the ground.

The move also builds on Delta’s existing tech relationship with Amazon through Amazon Web Services, with plans to integrate more personalization into its Delta Sync platform and seatback screens. That could mean smarter recommendations, more tailored content, and a more connected travel experience overall.

How This Compares to Other Airlines

There is certainly a broader trend here among airlines. JetBlue has already tapped Amazon’s satellite technology for its inflight Wi-Fi, and now Delta is following suit. Meanwhile, other airlines have been going all-in on Starlink for ultra-fast connectivity, including United, Alaska, and plenty of others.

At the end of the day, airlines are clearly focusing on delivering faster, more reliable (and often free) Wi-Fi to improve the onboard experience and keep passengers connected.

Hot Tip:

Delta already offers Wi-Fi across much of its fleet, including free messaging and an expanding rollout of free Wi-Fi. But this next-generation, Amazon-powered upgrade won’t start appearing until 2028 — so don’t expect a big change on your next Delta flight just yet.

Final Thoughts

Delta is bringing faster, more reliable Wi-Fi to its planes starting in 2028 by teaming up with Amazon’s satellite technology. It also joins JetBlue as the only other U.S. carrier to choose Amazon over Starlink for in-flight connectivity.

It sounds promising — but for now, we’ll have to wait a bit before experiencing it on board.
