Wine lovers, rejoice.

Delta is about to launch its new Wine Takes Flight program, allowing SkyMiles members to check their prized California winery purchases for free. It includes departures from 5 airports in California, available to a total of 50 destinations around the U.S.

Here’s what’s included, plus how to check your wine for free on your next Delta flight home from the wineries.

From the Wineries to Your Kitchen For Free With Delta

SkyMiles members visiting the Californian wine country no longer have to worry about how they’ll get their bottles of wine home.

Delta passengers with a SkyMiles membership can now check their freshly purchased Californian wine for free at Oakland (OAK), San Francisco (SFO), San Jose (SJC), Sacramento (SMF), and Sonoma County (STS) airports.

This is particularly good news for anyone planning to visit the famous Californian wine regions of Livermore Valley, Napa Valley, and Sonoma County.

Free wine carriage is even permitted on connecting itineraries to 50 airports around the U.S.

The offer is limited to 1 case per passenger. A case is defined as a single box or wine travel container with a maximum of 12 bottles, no larger than 750 milliliters each — the standard size for a wine bottle. The boxes must weigh no more than 50 pounds and adhere to the 62-inch size limit.

Here are a few rules to note regarding the carriage of wine:

  • Passengers must be at least 21 years old.
  • Wine bottles must be properly sealed and unopened.
  • Wine must be presented to an agent at the ticket counter, where it may be subject to inspection.
  • Delta has the right to refuse wine that isn’t packaged correctly or that has been opened.
  • Transporting wines to the California airports is not permitted.
  • The offer is not valid on codeshare itineraries.

Delta joins Alaska and Southwest Airlines, both of which already offer similar programs allowing passengers to carry their wine home from California for free.

Final Thoughts

Having the option to check wine for free is a great bonus for anyone wishing to take a taste of the wineries home with them. Now that Delta joins Alaska and Southwest, travelers around the U.S. have more choice than ever before when planning a trip to the vineyards.
