The Auberge Collection, a small collection of 25 luxury hotels and resorts around the globe, has added a dreamy 13th-century French chateau to its growing list of properties.

Just before the peak summer season, the Domaine des Etangs hotel officially joins The Auberge Collection as its second European property, bringing the utmost in luxury to the French countryside.

Whether you’re looking for a weekend getaway from Paris or an incredible stop along France’s beloved wine regions, here are the details on this property and how you can book your stay.

Domaine des Etangs

Located in the town of Massignac in western France, Domaine des Etangs sits atop 2,500 acres of rolling hills in the French countryside.

The hotel does a wonderful job of preserving the original grounds of the stone chateau, which was built more than 700 years ago. The Moulin des Etangs, a mill in its former life, is now the hotel’s wellness center outfitted with thermal baths, heated pools, steam rooms, and 5 treatment suites.

Outside of the spa and sanctuary, you’ll find an indoor-outdoor gym, a floating tennis court, numerous trails, and boats that you can take out onto the pond.

The Domaine des Etangs manages to feel expansive yet intimate, with just 7 rooms & suites in the chateau, 4 multi-story suites in the estate’s previous stables, and 6 cottages offering a residential feel sprawled across the property grounds. You can request Domaine’s electric vehicles to pick you up at any time, or rent one of the property’s bikes.

Besides the focus on wellness and luxurious rooms and suites, “Domaine des Etangs offers the chance to slow down, to reconnect with nature, loved ones, and the self in an environment of abundant space.” Dyades, the chateau’s main restaurant, takes a farm-to-table approach with dining with seasonal produce picked from the 21,000 square foot gardens.

Despite not being a part of a major hotel chain, Domaine des Etangs also happens to participate in the Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) and Mr & Mrs Smith — but it is not a participating hotel in those programs via Hilton or Hyatt, respectively.

Final Thoughts

The Auberge Collection boasts “one-of-a-kind experiences in extraordinary destinations,” with resorts in premier travel destinations, from Napa Valley to Los Cabos to now, Massignac, France. Over the next couple of years, the Auberge Collection plans to debut resorts in Florence, Italy; Fort Worth, Texas; Kiawah River, South Carolina; Miami; and San Francisco.

Owned by The Friedkin Group, Auberge Collection properties aren’t part of any major hotel chain. But as noted above, the Domaine des Etangs participates in the SLH and Mr & Mrs Smith programs.
