Plans for a Massive Renovation of Dulles Airport Come Into Clearer View

Washington, D.C.’s Dulles International Airport (IAD) is one of the most important in the country, serving as the primary international gateway for the nation’s capital and as one of United Airlines’ busiest hubs.

For decades, though, the airport has been maligned by the flying public, who lament its inefficient and disjointed layout — and, of course, the infamous mobile lounges that have been in use since 1962.

Now, however, at the behest of President Trump, there’s movement toward a complete overhaul of the airport, which is owned by the federal government and operated by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA).

Let’s take a look at the latest plans for this critically important airport.

Dulles Airport Overhaul To Cost More Than $20 Billion

President Trump, like many flyers, is not a fan of Washington, D.C.’s Dulles International Airport (IAD) in its current form. So he called for proposals to overhaul the airport.

Now, as reported by Thrifty Traveler, plans have come together to renovate and improve the derided airport, and they total more than $20 billion.

The renovation calls for adding 5 million square feet of space and a solution to finally ditch the mobile lounges (also known as “people movers”) that passengers love to hate.

The project will also create new check-in and security facilities that will more seamlessly connect to the airport’s 5 concourses (there are 4 currently, with the fifth under construction now), new parking lots and garages closer to the terminal building, more gates, larger customs facilities, and improvements to walkability throughout the entire complex.

Additionally, Concourses C and D, which are universally hated, will see complete renovations, and the existing AeroTrain system will be expanded and replaced to facilitate easier movement through the concourses.

As one of United‘s busiest hubs, the renovation will also include a larger Polaris Lounge, which will replace the current space that’s been open since 2021.

However, according to CBS News, the president is a fan of the Eero Saarinen-designed main terminal (as are many travelers and architecture aficionados). As such, it will remain a centerpiece of the airport despite its interior getting a massive overhaul.

CBS also reports that after fielding proposals from multiple entities, the president selected one backed by United Airlines. It calls for financing to come from the MWAA issuing tax-free bonds. United will handle contracting for the building projects and repay the bond financing through its operations at the airport.

The chosen plan doesn’t require any reconfiguration of the current runway setup, which is good news for the millions of flyers passing through the airport annually.

A construction timeline remains unknown for the project.
