Your next flight with Emirates in economy could be comfier, thanks to this unique tweak.

The Dubai-based airline is installing first-of-its-kind multiway adjustable headrests in some of its economy class cabins.

“Emirates never rests on its laurels when it comes to customer experience, and we have found a way to significantly improve the comfort for Economy Class passengers, especially those traveling long-haul”, said Tim Clark, president of Emirates.

Let’s take a look at this exciting update.

Emirates U-Dream Headrest Debut on Airbus A350 Aircraft

The world-first U-Dream headrests are already flying on three of Emirates‘ Airbus A350s. According to the airline, passengers who’ve experienced the new headrests already are giving “outstanding praise”.

The key feature of the game-changing side wings, which fold down around the passenger’s neck, and appear far more supportive than usual flappy headrest wings. The wings can also be folded inwards to help stop passengers’ heads tipping forward, jolting them awake.

This innovative design provides more neck and head support than any other economy seat in the sky — so much so that it might even out-comfort many premium economy seats.

Emirates is planning a fast installation, with the Safran economy seats on all of its Airbus A350s set to feature the U-Dream headrests by the end of the year. It won’t be until 2027 that the headrests will be added to the economy cabins of other aircraft types. To start with, only Emirates’ retrofitted Airbus A380 and Boeing 777s will have the headrests installed. All future deliveries of the long-awaited Boeing 777X will have the U-Dream headrests as standard.

At the time of writing, Montréal (YUL) is the only airport in North America where Emirates flies its Airbus A350. However, the aircraft operates on many of its Asian routes, so U.S.-based travelers could still experience the new product if connecting in Dubai (DXB).

Hot Tip:

Upgrade your comfort with more than just a fancy economy headrest and use points to fly Emirates business or even first class instead.

Final Thoughts

The U-Dream headrest certainly looks to be a winner. Being able to fall and stay asleep with proper head support is a dream come true for flyers who struggle to get proper rest in economy on long-haul flights.

Emirates could have easily introduced this product only in a few front rows of economy and charged passengers for the privilege. Let’s hope this could be the start of a new age of economy class that takes the dread out of long overnight flights.
