ETIAS, the “European Travel Information and Authorization System,” has now been delayed even further and will not take effect until 2027.

Let’s take a look at this news and what it means for travelers.

ETIAS Requirement Pushed Back Until 2027

ETIAS was supposed to go into effect this year. Now, it appears to have been delayed yet again.

Interestingly, the official European Union website still reads: “ETIAS will start operations in the last quarter of 2026. No action is required from travellers at this point. The European Union will inform about the specific date for the start of ETIAS several months prior to its launch.” However, it seems the ETIAS start date has now been pushed back to 2027, according to the Financial Times.

If you aren’t familiar, ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization that screens travelers prior to entering the Schengen Area to determine whether that person can enter.

Initially, ETIAS was supposed to launch in 2021. However, the EU has pushed back the rollout several times. The EU recently rolled out its digital border control processing, which brought the end of passport stamps — and incredible lines at many airports.

According to the EU, 1.4 billion people from dozens of visa-exempt countries and territories will be required to obtain a travel authorization to enter Schengen Area countries. These include the United States, Canada, Australia, and other countries.

You’ll apply through the official ETIAS website or app and pay a €20 fee (about $23). That’s nearly triple the €7 fee originally proposed when the program was first announced — talk about inflation. Most applications, once the program launches, are expected to process “within minutes.” ETIAS is valid for up to 3 years or until your passport expires. If you get a new passport, you’ll need to apply for a new ETIAS travel authorization.

The Schengen Area is a zone of 30 European countries that have removed their internal borders to “facilitate free and unrestricted movement of people.” Travelers on a U.S. passport can visit Schengen Area countries and stay for up to 90 days without issue.

Put simply, traveling within the Schengen Area is incredibly easy, as you don’t have to clear customs or immigration once you’re inside the zone. You’ll typically have your passport stamped once, when entering the zone, even if you’re traveling to multiple countries.

The following countries are Schengen states:

  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Croatia
  • Czech Republic
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Iceland
  • Italy
  • Latvia
  • Liechtenstein
  • Lithuania
  • Luxembourg
  • Malta
  • The Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Poland
  • Portugal
  • Slovakia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
Bottom Line:

Notably, some European countries don’t participate in the program. The United Kingdom, which left the European Union after Brexit, is a non-Schengen country. Additionally, most Eastern European countries aren’t in Schengen. Ireland also isn’t part of Schengen.

Final Thoughts

You have at least until 2027, although no specific date has been given, before the ETIAS requirement kicks in for travel to the Schengen Area in Europe. While traveling to Europe as a U.S. passport holder is still pretty easy, ETIAS (when it launches) adds a necessary extra step before your trip.
