Although I visited Singapore less than a year ago, my wife had never been. Since an opportunity to visit came up, we decided to make the most of it and head over for a quick weekend trip from Bali, Indonesia.

We only needed accommodation for a single night, so I thought it would be best to book a hotel. Unfortunately, Singapore hotels can be extremely pricey.

I remembered I had an expiring Free Night Award on my Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card and knew I could put it to good use in Singapore. After narrowing down my options, I selected the Varel Singapore, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, a brand-new property that opened April 1, 2026 — just a few days before my stay.

I had never stayed at a hotel right when it opened, so I was excited to see how it would be. Here’s what I found at the new Varel Singapore, a Tribue Portfolio Hotel.

1. It’s a Solid Use of a Marriott Free Night Certificate

Points redemption rates for the Varel Singapore vary significantly, but the property is available for 37,000 points on sporadic dates. For dates that require more than 35,000 points, Marriott also allows members to top off Free Night Awards with up to 25,000 additional points.

The Marriott Boundless card is a solid rewards card, especially for those who frequently stay at Marriott-branded hotels. It offers elevated earnings at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy and purchases at grocery stores, gas stations, and on dining.

It also provides several enticing benefits, including automatic Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite status15 Elite Night Credits each year (toward higher status tiers), and a Free Night Award at any participating Marriott Bonvoy hotel (worth up to 35,000 points).

The Marriott Boundless card has an annual fee of $95. However, the free night it provides is worth much more than that. Cash rates at the Varel Singapore hover around $289, which are significantly higher than the cost of having this card.

2. It Has a Prime Location in Little India

The Varel Singapore is on Selegie Road in the heart of Singapore’s Little India neighborhood. The property is less than a 15-minute walk from many Singapore attractions, including Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, the Former House of Tan Teng Niah, Plaza Singapura, Sim Lim Square, and Sri Krishnan Temple.

The hotel is also less than a 5-minute walk from Little India subway station, a stop on the Downtown and North East Lines. Being a short walk from the MRT station made getting around incredibly convenient.

3. Rooms Were Modern and Luxurious

As expected at a brand-new hotel, rooms at the Varel Singapore were modern, clean, and thoughtfully designed, reflecting the hotel’s recent opening. Unfortunately, rooms are on the smaller side, but the space is used efficiently.

At check-in, I was upgraded to a slightly larger Superior King room with a balcony on the eighth floor, thanks to my Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite status.

The room felt refined and understated, common to many Tribute Portfolio hotels I’ve stayed at in the past. The king-size bed was comfortable, with a plush, padded headboard that enhanced the room’s style.

The room also featured a balcony, a great way to take in Singapore’s hustle and bustle below. Of course, the balcony offered some tremendous views of the Little India neighborhood.

Bottom Line:

Overall, the room had a simple layout and was on the smaller end. Still, it was nice, and the balcony was a welcome addition.

4. The Hotel Offers Solid Amenities

The Varel Singapore offers guests a few amenities, including a rooftop infinity pool and a fully equipped fitness center. Although I did not use the fitness center, I took full advantage of the rooftop pool.

The pool was immaculate and lined with several lounge chairs. Unfortunately, the pool was not deep at either end, but it was still one of the nicest pools I have ever experienced at a hotel.

My wife and I were the only guests at the rooftop pool for over an hour around sunset.

Another delightful perk at the property is the complimentary gelato served from the Denzy Gelato cart in the lobby. This was such a thoughtful touch, as it gives guests a chance to try excellent gelato and converse with staff members who really seem to enjoy their jobs.

5. There Are Several On-Site Dining Options

The Varel Singapore features 3 on-site food and beverage options: Hathaway Autograph, Vernacular Coffee, and Saga Bar.

Hathaway Autograph is the property’s main, all-day dining restaurant serving Southeast Asian cuisine. Vernacular Coffee is the hotel’s cafe, and Saga Bar is the private hotel lounge and cocktail bar.

As a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite member, my wife and I received complimentary breakfast at Hathaway Autograph. The buffet breakfast offered a good selection of Western and Southeast Asian dishes. The Singaporean Laksa was delicious.

Final Thoughts

The Varel Singapore, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, is a new property with an excellent location in the heart of Singapore’s Little India neighborhood. The hotel boasts some solid amenities, including a rooftop pool and several on-site food and beverage options.

As a Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite member, I appreciated the recognition and benefits provided during my stay. The hotel delivered on its elite perks and amenities, enhancing overall comfort and value.

Perhaps the most compelling aspect of the property was the value it offered. I redeemed a Marriott free night certificate for my 1-night stay. Considering the hotel’s quality, location, and amenities, it represented excellent value for money. I would absolutely consider staying at Varel Singapore again on a future visit to Singapore.
