Air France–KLM’s Flying Blue program has long been a favorite for points enthusiasts thanks to its solid transatlantic availability and easy-to-earn miles. But if you’ve noticed saver-level Air France or KLM awards getting harder to find, you’re not imagining it. Availability has dipped over time, especially in business class.

Recently, however, Flying Blue quietly introduced a significant change that makes finding the lowest award prices much easier, but only if you hold elite status at the top levels.

Here’s what this modification means for your future award redemptions.

Flying Blue Platinum and Ultimate Elites Now Get Access to Better Award Pricing

Flying Blue has now officially added a new published benefit for its top-tier Platinum and Ultimate elite status members — a change first spotted by One Mile at a Time — giving them access to more award availability at the program’s lowest award rates.

In reality, this means elite members will see more saver-level award space than non-elites, a meaningful advantage given how scarce those seats have become on long-haul routes, especially in business class. Therefore, when those lowest award prices are available, elites are far more likely to see them appear in their searches.

For example, when searching for business-class award space in January, typically a lower-demand month for Paris and Europe overall, I’m seeing plenty of dates priced around 142,000 miles one-way, while a handful still drop as low as 60,000 miles. I assume that Flying Blue elites are simply seeing more of those 60,000-mile results, while non-elites are left with the higher rates on most dates.

What’s interesting is how broad this seems to be; it’s not limited to just 1 or 2 routes. The pattern appears across various markets, including long-haul business class flights, where saver awards are often the first to sell out.

Hot Tip:

If you’re not a Flying Blue Platinum member, use flexible-date searches or set alerts for transatlantic awards on a tool like seats.aero — saver space may exist, but you’ll need to be more proactive to snag it before elites do.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, this move by Flying Blue aligns with a broader trend: airlines are offering their best award rates and more availability to their most loyal members. It’s a clear win if you’re Platinum or Ultimate with the program, but for many U.S.-based flyers who don’t hold that status, those lower award prices may become even harder to snag.
