If you’ve ever tried to keep track of when your Flying Blue miles expire, you’re not alone in thinking that the policy was complex. Between flight activity, partner earnings, and different rules depending on your status, it hasn’t exactly been simple.

Now, Flying Blue, the shared loyalty program of Air France and KLM, has rolled out a refreshingly straightforward update that’s a win for travelers. And honestly, it’s about time.

Flying Blue Moves to a Single 24-Month Validity Rule

As of today, May 4, 2026, all Flying Blue miles will share a single 24-month validity period. More importantly, any eligible earning activity will extend your entire balance by 24 months, according to a new policy announced on February 26.

To understand why this matters, let’s look at the old rules for Explorer members 18 and older:

  • Flight activity extended all miles for 2 years
  • Partner or “commercial” activity only extended the miles earned from partners
  • Flying activity was required to extend the miles earned from flying

In practice, that meant you could earn miles through a hotel stay or rental car and still watch part of your balance inch toward expiration. Not ideal.

Under the new system, any qualifying activity resets the clock on everything. Book a flight, credit a partner hotel stay, rent a car, or complete another eligible earning activity, and your full balance gets a fresh 24-month window.

Existing balances will also be consolidated at launch, with the most favorable expiration date applying to all miles.

Elite and Elite Plus members, co-branded credit card holders, Flying Blue Extra subscribers, and members under 18 will continue to have miles that never expire.

Why This Is a Meaningful Improvement

First, simplicity wins. You’ve got 1 expiration clock and 1 extension rule. Now, you don’t need to track separate buckets of miles.

Second, flexibility improves significantly.

Previously, if you weren’t flying, your options to protect flight-earned miles were limited. Now, everyday activity works. That includes rental cars, hotel bookings, and ongoing spending on the recently revamped Air France KLM Visa Signature® Credit Card.

That’s a big shift.

Why? It means you no longer need to book a mileage run just to preserve your balance. Organic activity, whether it’s daily spending or a partner promotion, keeps everything alive.

For travelers saving for premium economy or business class awards to Europe, this makes long-term planning far less stressful. You can build toward a meaningful redemption without worrying that part of your balance will quietly expire along the way.

In short, Flying Blue removed friction, and loyalty programs rarely move in that direction.

Final Thoughts

Not every program update deserves a round of applause. This one does.

By moving to a single 24-month validity period and allowing any eligible activity to extend the entire balance, Flying Blue has made its program clearer and more forgiving.

If you’ve ever felt confused by expiring miles, this change should feel like a breath of fresh air.
