First class, and now free upgrades? What is happening at Frontier Airlines’ headquarters in Denver?

At a time when legacy carriers continue to devalue their loyalty programs, this ultra-low-cost carrier is doing the opposite by offering free seat upgrades to its elite members.

“Frontier’s most loyal customers will have even more reason to make us their airline of choice this year as they start enjoying free seat upgrades and other enhancements, adding extra comfort and convenience to their travel,” said Bobby Schroeter, chief commercial officer at Frontier Airlines.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Frontier Introduces Complimentary Upgrades for Its Elite Members

Less than a year ago, Frontier overhauled its Frontier Miles loyalty program, and today we’ve learned more about the complimentary upgrades that were teased at the end of 2024 with the announcement of a first class!

As of January 15, Platinum and Gold elite members of Frontier Miles are eligible for complimentary upgrades to Premium Seating and UpFront Plus seats — both which come with guaranteed blocked middle seats.

Upgrades to the all-new first-class will also be available once the seats are introduced later in 2025.

Platinum members will have access to upgrades 12 hours before departure, and Gold members will have access 4 hours before departure.

No mention was made in the announcement about when top-tier Diamond elites will get access to secure upgrades. Upgraded Points has reached out to Frontier and is waiting for clarification.

The details of the new upgrade perk come as part of the airline’s so-called ‘The New Frontier’ project, which is bringing about huge changes to the airline’s business model, such as the removal of change and cancellation fees and a complete revamp of the bundled fares it’s famously known for.

Hot Tip:

Did you know Frontier has a co-branded credit card? It offers many valuable benefits for frequent Frontier flyers, including the ability to earn elite status just by spending on the card.

Final Thoughts

Frontier Airlines is slowly but surely leaving its ultra-low-cost identity behind in favor of a more full-service business model.

As elite status holders with full-service carriers face increasing challenges in maintaining their status and domestic upgrades become increasingly rare, Frontier’s changes may prompt even the most devoted airline loyalists to reconsider their loyalty strategies.

We’ll keep you updated on Frontier’s first-class seat upgrade system and when Diamond elites can get upgrades as the rollout progresses.
