Traveling in the Nordic region can be expensive. It’s not uncommon to spend $25 for a bowl of soup or $7 for a cup of coffee. While anyone who has visited the Nordic countries understands the expense and can plan ahead, it’s always a bonus to discover a little-known savings.

That’s why finding a way to get free coffee throughout the region and a 2-for-1 breakfast deal felt like a small travel victory — and something I had to share.

Here’s how to claim your free daily coffee and your weekly 2-for-1 breakfast deal with Strawberry hotels.

Hotels That Offer the Perk

Strawberry, a major regional hotel chain, is headquartered in Oslo, Norway. It is formerly known as Nordic Choice Hotels and has around 250 properties in 6 northern countries. The free coffee and 2-for-1 breakfast deals are available at every hotel in the brand network.

Best of all, you don’t need to stay at a Strawberry hotel to take advantage of the benefits. Here’s a list of where you can find Strawberry hotels:

• Norway (113 hotels)
• Sweden (113 hotels)
• Finland (19 hotels)
• Denmark (7 hotels)
• Faroe Islands (2 hotels)
• Lithuania (1 hotel)

If you’re visiting any of these countries, you could save significantly on food and beverage costs and enjoy unique, discounted breakfast experiences along the way.

How To Qualify for Strawberry Rewards Benefits

You don’t need elite status with the hotel program or a paid stay at an affiliated hotel to qualify for free coffee and weekly 2-for-1 breakfasts at Strawberry hotels.

Simply download the Strawberry app and sign up for the free-to-join Strawberry rewards program. You immediately become a Blue member and qualify for these free breakfast benefits. Additional benefits include a member discount on stays and the ability to earn and redeem Spenn rewards points, the program’s rewards currency.

Now, let’s look at the details on how to use the benefits.

How To Use the Free Coffee Benefit

The free coffee benefit can be used once per day at any Strawberry hotel property. Here’s how it works.

Find a Strawberry Hotel

Let’s presume you’re in Helsinki, Finland, and you’re out for a morning walk. You could really go for a free cup of coffee and want to find the nearest Strawberry hotel (there are 13 in Helsinki). Remember, staying at the hotel is not a requirement to receive your free cup of coffee.

Finding a Strawberry hotel is as simple as searching the hotel’s website for a nearby location or using the app. I easily found a Strawberry hotel near the hotel I was staying at in Helsinki, Finland.

Redeem Your Free Cup of Coffee

Once you’ve found a hotel, you can approach the front desk, a restaurant server, or a bartender and tell them you’re a member and would like to redeem your free coffee benefit.

Then, in the Strawberry app, find the banner for free coffee in your profile. When you’re ready to redeem your benefit, click the banner, and the redemption option will pop up. Don’t click to redeem until you’re at the property and in front of the employee.

I approached the front desk at the F6 hotel in Helsinki, asked if they were familiar with the benefit, and was immediately offered my free coffee or tea. Another benefit was access to the hotel’s Wi-Fi and a comfortable place to take a break.

What’s the value of a free cup of coffee or tea? My beverage at the F6 hotel would have cost €5, a typical price for hotel coffee in the Nordic countries. Since you can use this benefit once per day, it can save you money and give you a nice break while you explore.

How To Use the 2-for-1 Monday Breakfast Benefit

Breakfast in the Nordic countries is an important meal. It’s typically high in protein and includes quality local ingredients. However, the meal can be expensive.

Many hotels include breakfast, but if yours does not, the Strawberry 2-for-1 breakfast benefit could save the day. To use the perk:

• Open the Strawberry app or use this map to find a Strawberry hotel near you
• Book a reservation under the benefit tab in the app (or website)

Here’s an example of a breakfast booking through the Strawberry app at the Clarion Hotel Mestari in Helsinki, Finland. When you make the reservation, you pay up front for 1 of the 2 breakfasts.

The 2-for-1 breakfast benefit lets you enjoy interesting dining venues at half the regular price. It’s not uncommon to pay $30 or more for breakfast in Nordic countries, so the benefit can be extremely valuable. It’s also nice knowing your breakfast is prepaid, with no need to ask for the discount or hope the hotel is aware of the benefit.

When paying for the 2-for-1 breakfast, use a card that earns solid rewards on the purchase. I use my Chase Sapphire Reserve^®, which earns 3x points on dining worldwide — if the hotel breakfast shows up as a hotel purchase, I earn 4x points.

Alternatively, I could use my Chase Sapphire Preferred^® Card, as it earns 3x points on dining and 2x points on travel (including hotels).

Using Points To Stay at Strawberry Hotels

If you’d like to stay at Strawberry hotels with points, you can do so with Choice Privileges points.

Strawberry is part of Choice Hotels, allowing you to redeem Choice Privileges points for stays throughout the Nordic region. There are currently 4 rewards programs that transfer to Choice Privileges:

• American Express Membership Rewards points — 1:1
• Capital One miles — 1:1
• Citi ThankYou Points — 1:1.5
• Wells Fargo Rewards points — 1:2

While we don’t recommend transferring points at a 1:1 ratio to Choice Privileges unless you’re topping off your balance for a specific hotel redemption, transferring Wells Fargo Rewards points at a 1:2 ratio could be a good value.

The Wells Fargo Autograph℠ Card and the Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Card are popular cards that earn transferable rewards.

Final Thoughts

Anytime you can score free coffee and a 2-for-1 breakfast without having to meet a list of requirements or jump through hoops, it’s a good thing.

This benefit could save you $35 to $45 a week in beverage costs and another $30 to $40 a week on breakfast. Plus, you can visit new properties and have new experiences along the way. If you’re traveling through the Nordic countries, you’ll certainly want to take advantage of these benefits.
