One of Hyatt’s most family-friendly beach resorts in Mexico will leave the World of Hyatt program next month.

The Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen will transition to a hotel brand outside World of Hyatt starting at 11:59 p.m. local time on July 31, 2025. After that date, the 314-room property will reopen under a new, still unnamed brand as an adults-only, all-inclusive resort.

While the hotel’s exit is newsworthy on its own, the bigger issue is how Hyatt is handling existing bookings — a process that’s proving frustrating for guests who had summer vacation plans, particularly those using points or traveling with children.

Here’s what you need to know if you’ve already booked — or were planning to.

Key Details About the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen’s Exit

The Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen will officially exit the World of Hyatt program on July 31, 2025, and rebrand as an adults-only, all-inclusive resort. After that date, members can no longer earn or redeem Hyatt points, and elite benefits won’t apply.

The Hyatt website currently displays a disclaimer alerting guests that the hotel will soon exit the Hyatt program.

Part of the disclaimer reads, “PLEASE READ: Effective July 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. local time, Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen will transition to a hotel brand outside of the Hyatt portfolio and is expected to honor all paid reservations.”

Hyatt corporate has urged impacted guests with existing reservations at the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen to contact them about their reservation. However, guests report being told that reservations, specifically those purchased as cash bookings through July 31, 2025, will be honored, but award reservations and those involving children will not.

This situation has frustrated many World of Hyatt members, especially families with children and those who booked using points. Many have also made significant investments, from flights to destination weddings. With the hotel set to become an adults-only, all-inclusive property and likely move to a higher price tier, Hyatt appears unwilling to make exceptions for points bookings and those with children listed in the reservation.

The lack of clear options has created a headache for families and groups counting on this beachfront resort, forcing many to scramble for alternatives before their planned vacations.

Where To Book After the Grand Hyatt Exit

While we hope guests with confirmed plans, points reservations, and families with children can resolve their bookings amid the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen’s departure from World of Hyatt, several nearby resort alternatives are available for those affected.

  • Hyatt Ziva Cancún (family-friendly all-inclusive, Category C): Roughly 60 miles north, with kids’ water park and nightly entertainment.
  • Hyatt Zilara Riviera Maya (adults-only all-inclusive, Category C): Offers upscale suites, beachfront pools, and a more serene alternative for couples or solo travelers.
  • Hilton Playa del Carmen (adults-only, all-inclusive): Bookable with Hilton Honors points if you travel child-free.

Final Thoughts

The sudden departure of the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen from the World of Hyatt program has left many loyal members scrambling, especially families with children, award travelers, and wedding groups that made significant plans and financial commitments months in advance.

With the hotel set to become an adults-only, all-inclusive resort starting August 1, 2025, travelers are now racing to adjust itineraries, secure refunds, or find comparable alternatives — often at a higher cash rate.

For now, travelers with upcoming stays should confirm the status of their reservations, particularly if booking with points or traveling with children — and be prepared to pivot to other Hyatt properties or different hotel brands in the Riviera Maya.
