If you carry a Hawaiian Airlines credit card, there’s some good news you should be aware of. The card’s companion discounts — long limited to Hawaiian Airlines flights between Hawaii and the mainland — just got a major upgrade. Cardholders can now use them on select Alaska Airlines flights across North America, adding significant flexibility and value to an already valuable perk.

Here’s what’s changed and why this update makes the Hawaiian cards far more valuable for travelers on the mainland.

You Can Now Use Hawaiian’s Companion Discounts on Alaska Airlines Flights

As first noticed by Frequent Miler, Hawaiian Airlines credit cardholders just got a welcome surprise. The popular companion discounts — a $100 annual discount and a one-time 50% companion fare — can now be used not only on Hawaiian-operated flights between Hawaii and the mainland but also on Alaska Airlines flights within North America.

That’s a big win for travelers who live on the mainland. Until now, these certificates were only valid for round-trip flights to or from Hawaii, making them difficult to use unless you were island-bound.

Here’s how the new rules work:

  • The Hawaiian Airlines® Business Mastercard® and Hawaiian Airlines® World Elite Mastercard® both come with a one-time 50%-off companion fare, now valid for round-trip coach travel on Hawaiian flights between Hawaii and North America or on Alaska Airlines-operated flights within North America.
  • The personal cards also include an annual $100 companion discount, which now applies to Alaska Airlines routes across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

This updated language is now live on the official application pages for all 3 cards (from both Barclays and Bank of Hawaii), confirming it’s a permanent change, not a limited test.

For travelers based on the West Coast, in cities such as Seattle, Portland, San Diego, and other Alaska Airlines gateways, these companion perks suddenly make a lot more sense, and could be reason enough to hang on to the card after the first year.

Hot Tip:

If you’re an existing Hawaiian cardholder, check your online account or call customer service to confirm your certificate now shows Alaska Airlines eligibility. Some users report their portals still display the older Hawaii-only terms, though the new language is live on the card’s public site.

Final Thoughts

This is a subtle — but big — win for Hawaiian Airlines cardholders. By extending companion discount eligibility to Alaska Airlines’ North American network, the benefit is now useful even if you’re not flying to Hawaii.

If you regularly travel with a partner or family member, this could easily cover the card’s annual fee — and allow you to finally put those companion discounts to good use.
