The loyalty points world has been shaken up in unimaginable ways by the pandemic.

The latest change to make the news is from the Hilton Honors program and its decision to permanently increase its points expiration.

Let’s find out more.

Hilton Honors Points Now Last Longer

Hilton Honors‘ current policy is that points will expire if there is no activity in an account over the course of a 15-month period.

From Thursday, December 9, 2022, this period will be almost double to 24 months — that’s a whole 2 years!

The extension comes at a time when travel is still out of the question for many as we continue to navigate through the pandemic and spending and earning points might not be on the agenda for some.

There are many ways that members can keep their points from expiring in that time, including earning or spending Hilton Honors points.

You can earn Hilton Honors points by staying at a Hilton hotel or by spending with a Hilton co-branded credit card.

Alternatively, you can redeem Hilton Honors points on a Hilton stay, or even with one of the program’s partners, such as Amazon, Lyft, or Ticketmaster.

And finally, if you’re feeling charitable this holiday season, you could purchase or donate points through Pointworthy.

Doing 1 or all of the above just once during the newly-extended 24-month period will ensure that your hard-earned points don’t expire.

How Long Do Points Usually Stay Valid?

Hilton Honors’ points validity extension brings it in line with other major hotel loyalty programs like Marriott Bonvoy and World of Hyatt, which already have a 24-month expiration date on their relative points currencies.

Elsewhere in the points world, some airline loyalty program points, like Delta SkyMiles, Southwest Rapid Rewards, and United MileagePlus never expire!

Final Thoughts

Hilton Honors matching the points expiry time of some of its biggest competition is certainly welcome news. You can now relax in knowing that your stash of Hilton Honors points isn’t going to disappear if your account is likely to be inactive for some time.

It will be interesting to see what other extensions are rolled out across the industry given the continued uncertainty around travel.
