I’ve stayed at lots of Hyatt Place locations over the years. While you won’t get luxurious suites or fancy touches in your room, you can always count on Hyatt Place doing a few things well: a comfortable bed, convenient location, fair price, and a complimentary breakfast.

Until now, that is.

Hyatt has confirmed that some of its Hyatt Place locations are currently testing “breakfast not included” rates. Here’s what you should know about this news at a brand famous for offering breakfast to everyone.

Hyatt Place Conducting a Trial on No-Breakfast Rates

Among the many Hyatt hotel brands, you’ll find Hyatt Place as one of the least expensive options. That doesn’t mean stays at these properties aren’t enjoyable, given that they provide what you need at a fair price — and usually in a solid location.

If you look up “hotels that offer free breakfast to everyone” in the dictionary, you might find a picture of a Hyatt Place. The brand has mostly built its reputation on that element. However, it’s now running limited trials on doing the opposite: charging for breakfast.

To be clear, not every Hyatt Place location is charging for breakfast. Additionally, it’s still possible to book rates that include breakfast for everyone in your room.

We had to search over 30 Hyatt Place locations before finding a property with the “Do you want breakfast included?” options on the final page before providing your payment method. On a random date in February 2025, the Hyatt Place Chicago/Downtown-The Loop is charging $11 to add breakfast to the reservation.

When considering whether that $11 upcharge is worth it, remember that Hyatt Place breakfast usually has scrambled eggs, either bacon or sausage, oatmeal, orange juice, hot coffee, and some type of fruit. There’s not much beyond that. You’ll serve yourself from the buffet, and you don’t have to leave a tip. As you do the math, add in the convenience factor of snagging breakfast from your hotel lobby, rather than going elsewhere.

This limited test on rates that don’t include breakfast is limited to only certain Hyatt Place locations in the U.S., as confirmed by a spokesperson for Hyatt:

At the moment, a limited number of Hyatt Place hotels in the U.S.  are piloting new grab-and-go menu options while others are testing a rate plan that allows guests to book a stay that does not include breakfast. World of Hyatt Globalists continue to enjoy a free breakfast at all Hyatt Place hotels globally (when booked through Hyatt channels).

At pilot hotels, guests are not required to book through Hyatt channels in order to book a rate plan that includes breakfast. To book a reservation with breakfast included on Hyatt.com, guests can simply select a “bed and breakfast” room type upon booking.

Thus, you won’t have to book directly with World of Hyatt to have these different rate options. However, you still need to book directly with Hyatt if you want stay credit or benefits from your elite status.

Speaking of elite status, Hyatt Globalists will still enjoy complimentary breakfast as a guaranteed benefit, regardless of which rate they choose. You’ll see the breakfast and no-breakfast options once you choose a room type and move to the rate options while making a reservation with Hyatt. The page after choosing a rate is the final page, asking for your name and method of payment.

If you don’t see the breakfast options when choosing a rate, it means the hotel isn’t participating in this trial. Breakfast should still be included for all guests at those properties.

Hot Tip:

We’re not sure how hotels will seek to enforce breakfast access for those who didn’t pay for it at the time of booking. The breakfast area is generally a free-for-all at Hyatt Place, so implementing checks on guests in the morning seems like a large undertaking.

Final Thoughts

Some Hyatt Place locations are participating in a test, offering room rates that are a little bit cheaper but don’t include daily breakfast. This is limited to an unknown number of locations (though it is small) in the U.S., and you’ll have the option to choose a rate that does or doesn’t include breakfast at the time of booking. Luckily, the options are pretty clear. What’s not clear is how hotels will enforce the breakfast payment plans when the crowds show up at the buffet each morning.
