The cash rate is equivalent to purchasing the other half of the reservation in points.

It will likely only benefit those who are truly short on points. As a result, you’re not really saving anything by purchasing the points for the other half of the reservation. Should you need to cancel your reservation, you’ll only receive points back for the entire stay, as the cash portion is non-refundable. This is a true outlier for hotel programs.
