Did you know that you can earn airline miles — rather than hotel points — when staying at hotels? Odds are you may have heard of this option, but it doesn’t typically represent a great earning structure compared to options for a hotel’s loyalty program.

Now, IHG One Rewards has sweetened the pot by introducing a new promotion, allowing you to earn triple the United MileagePlus miles for your stays. Here’s what you should know!

Earn Bonus United Miles at IHG Hotels and Resorts — Details

With this promotion, you can earn between 3x to 6x United MileagePlus miles on all stays at IHG hotels and resorts:

• Register for the promotion first with your IHG One Rewards account
• Book an IHG stay by June 30, 2024
• Must change earning preference to “miles”
• Complete stay by August 31, 2024
• Earn a maximum of 15,000 miles during the promotion
• Allow up to 6 weeks to be awarded miles

You’ll normally earn 2x United miles at most IHG properties, and 1x miles at Candlewood Suites and Staybridge Suites. With the triple miles promotion, you’ll earn 6x miles and 3x miles, respectively.

Is It Worth It?

We don’t generally recommend switching your earnings to airline miles rather than hotel points for your stays because the ratio isn’t great.

But with the new offer, you could earn 6x United miles per $1 spent at most IHG properties, up to 15,000 miles. We value United miles at 1.3 cents each, which means you’re netting a solid 7.8% return on your spend.

When earning miles, you also won’t be compensated extra for other promotions or by being an elite member.

As a general member of IHG One Rewards, you’ll earn between 5x and 10x points per dollar spent at hotels. This doesn’t factor in IHG elite status you may have — which is easily achievable via an IHG co-branded credit card.

Ultimately, it depends on whether you’d prefer to earn United MileagePlus miles or IHG One Rewards points.
