Did you know that you can earn airline miles rather than hotel points when staying at hotels? Odds are you may have heard of this option, but it doesn’t typically represent a great earning structure compared to options for a hotel’s loyalty program. Now, IHG One Rewards has sweetened the pot by introducing a new promotion, allowing you to earn an extra 1,000 United MileagePlus miles for your stays. Let’s take a look.

Offer Details

IHG United miles promotion

With this promotion, you can earn up to 1,000 United MileagePlus miles on every 2-night stay now through the promotion’s end.

  • Book and stay now through November 30, 2022
  • Must change earning preference to “miles”
  • Book via this link in order to qualify
  • Promotion is capped at 15,000 miles
  • Allow up to 6 weeks to be awarded miles

Is It Worth It?

We don’t generally recommend switching your earnings over to miles rather than hotel points for your stays because the ratio isn’t great. As an example, you’ll usually earn just 2x United miles per $1 spent at (most) IHG hotels. We value United miles at 1.3 cents each, which means you’re netting a 2.6% return on your spend.

This current promotion offers you a flat 1,000 miles for your stay, so you’ll be earning $13 worth of United miles, no matter how much you spend.

When earning miles, you also won’t be compensated extra for other promotions (like IHG’s current 4x promo) or by being an elite member.

As a general member of IHG One Rewards, you’ll earn between 5x and 10x points per dollar spent at hotels. This doesn’t factor in any elite status — which is easily achievable via an IHG co-branded credit card.

Let’s say you’re booking 2 nights at the Intercontinental San Francisco in early September:

As a general IHG One Rewards member who’s signed up for the current 4x promotion, you’ll be earning 20x points per dollar on this stay, netting you 9,724 IHG One Rewards points. We value IHG One Rewards points at 0.5 cents each, so you’ll end up with $48.62 worth of IHG One Rewards points in your pocket.

Compare this to the $13 in United miles you can otherwise acquire, and you’ll see why we don’t often recommend this method.

Final Thoughts

IHG One Rewards’ newest promotion allows you to earn extra United miles for 2-night stays now through the end of November. It’s not a great deal for most folks, but if you’re looking at some extremely cheap cash rates for hotels and don’t see yourself redeeming those IHG One Rewards points, this may be worth a second look.
