United is entering its “show off” era.

On the same day the airline announced a whopping 13-route expansion for 2027, it showed off the first Airbus A321XLR at an exclusive media event in a hangar at Newark Liberty International Airport.

For an airline like United, which was described by Patrick Quayle, president of global network planning and alliances at United, as “more of a lifestyle brand than an airline,” the Airbus A321XLR will play a crucial role in creating that identity.

What Is The Airbus A321XLR, and Why Should We Be Excited About It?

United is actually debuting 2 variations of the Airbus A321: the A321neo Coastliner that will operate exclusively transcontinental routes and the A321XLR, dubbed “Born to Explore,” that will fly internationally across oceans.

The first Airbus A321XLR, registered N64321, will enable United to reach new and unique European destinations that it’s never flown to before. The aircraft’s launch destination will be Ibiza (IBZ), Spain, on May 31, 2027.

Both Scott Kirby, United CEO, and Quayle spoke excitedly about the aircraft, with a particular focus on the exciting new destinations it will unlock for United flyers.

Not only that, but the Airbus A321XLR will be United’s most premium-dense plane.

The sleek Polaris cabin features just 20 suites in a 1-1 configuration.

Closing privacy doors and lie-flat beds are the norm in business class these days, and United’s doors have already been certified. That means they can be closed from the planes’ first flights. However, I was intrigued to see what United has done to make this passenger experience as close to a wide-body as possible.

All 20 suites have sliding privacy doors.

United has managed to disprove the myth that lie-flat suites on narrow body aircraft are cramped and uncomfortable. Look how much shoulder space there is here. The consoles on either side of the seat curve inwards, creating more space around the seat itself. This is a great achievement considering the seats are in the less popular herringbone layout.

I was pleased to see United did a great job with the positioning of the IFE screen, which has been a pain point for some other airlines’ Airbus A321s with lie-flat seats. It pops out easily with the touch of a button, and its smooth swivel design should allow it to stay without being fully stowed during food service.

Easy to release...

The tray table has also been designed with the passenger in mind. The release button is clearly visible and simple to use, and it can be fernangled so that you’re not completely trapped in your seat should nature call during meal service. It also has a device support flap for those who prefer to watch content on their phones or tablets rather than IFE.

The footrest can also be reached while in the upright position, adding an extra layer of comfort during takeoff and landing.

Premium Plus

United’s Airbus A321XLRs also have a small Premium Plus (premium economy) cabin between Polaris and economy. The intimate cabin has just 12 seats made of 3 rows in a 2-2 configuration, similar to domestic first class.

The seats are wide and have comfortable padding.

The adjustable headrests and deeper recline provide elevated comfort for a lower price point than Polaris. Notable features include the marble-effect cocktail table and huge IFE screens. While it doesn’t afford complete privacy, the sliding partition (pictured below) should prevent any unwanted seatmate eye contact.

Economy Plus

The Airbus A321XLR will feature 36 Economy Plus seats, boasting an extra 3 inches of legroom compared to regular economy. However, it will also feature United’s all-new blocked middle seat, in which a fixed table replaces the middle seat in a single row to create the feeling of extra space — and, hopefully, comfort.

Only 4 passengers on the whole aircraft will be able to select these seats, which are very similar to what many European airlines call “business class.”

Economy

The rest of the plane is made up of 82 economy seats.

I didn’t get much time to get a detailed look at these seats. At first glance, the tray tables seem quite narrow, and the seat’s recline looks fairly modest.

The most exciting innovation for economy passengers is the new snack bar at the rear of the aircraft. This is similar to what United’s new bestie JetBlue has on its long-range Airbus A321s.

Final Thoughts

There’s no denying that United’s new Airbus A321XLRs will usher in a new era of travel, both in terms of destinations and passenger experience. We can’t wait to try it out for ourselves!
