It looks like United is preparing a dedicated subfleet of Airbus A321neo aircraft for premium transcontinental routes.

Nothing has been explicitly confirmed by the airline yet, but let’s take a look at what we know so far.

United’s Upcoming ‘Coastliner’ A321neos

United is expecting a huge influx of narrow-body Airbus A321neo aircraft — 175 in total — with the majority configured with a fairly typical domestic layout: 20 seats in first class and 180 in economy.

However, as X user JonNYC shared, via X user Tobi, a soon-to-be-delivered A321neo was spotted with a special sticker toward the aft that says “Coastliner,” which implies a special configuration designated for premium transcontinental routes.

After the aircraft was spotted and shared on X, United’s official X account posted a teaser clip, seemingly confirming it’s on the way.

We’ll certainly know more very soon, but here’s what’s expected for this subfleet of A321neos:

  • The sub-fleet will comprise 40 total aircraft.
  • The Coastliner aircraft will be known by the code A321LF.
  • The aircraft will feature 20 lie-flat business class seats in a 1-1 configuration, 12 seats in premium economy in a 2-2 configuration, and 129 economy seats in a standard 3-3 configuration.

It’s important to note that these are different aircraft from United’s upcoming Airbus A321XLRs, which will operate transatlantic flights — though they should have a very similar (or identical) business class product.

United’s been waiting on an aircraft like this for a long time. Years ago, it indicated it would use the Boeing 737 MAX 10 for this purpose, but that jet has yet to be certified, so it has seemingly devised a new solution to up the ante on its premium transcontinental offering in short order.

Right now, United’s premium transcontinental offering primarily encompasses flights from Newark (EWR) to Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO). But with 40 new aircraft coming into service for these routes, it’s likely we’ll see an expansion in premium transcontinental service from airports like Boston (BOS) and, eventually, New York (JFK) to those California cities — and maybe even more destinations in the future.

Competition is fierce in the premium transcontinental market, but each of the 3 major U.S. legacy carriers — American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines — finds itself in a transition period in this space.

American is actively phasing out its dedicated subfleet of Airbus A321T aircraft in favor of the A321XLR, which will be used both for transcontinental and transatlantic flying.

Delta, meanwhile, is also eagerly awaiting its own subfleet of Airbus A321neos for its transcontinental offering, but it’s having huge issues with the certification of the seats it wants to install. In the meantime, Delta flies a mix of wide-body aircraft, including the Boeing 767 and Airbus A330, though many of these aircraft have dated interiors.

Hot Tip:

Learn more about United’s upcoming Airbus A321XLRs, which are expected to fly “long-and-thin” transatlantic routes.

Final Thoughts

United is clearly preparing to show off a special new variant of its upcoming Airbus A321neo aircraft, called the Coastliner. We should know more in the coming weeks — if not days — about this exciting new plane that will operate on the carrier’s premium transcontinental routes.
