JetBlue is the first airline to pass along the higher cost of jet fuel to passengers.

The good news? It doesn’t apply to every passenger, and the increase is capped at $9 per bag.

“Adjusting fees for optional services used by select customers, such as checked baggage, allows us to continue offering more competitive fares,” a representative for JetBlue told CBS News on Monday.

Let’s take a look at how the bag fees might affect your next JetBlue flight.

JetBlue Increases Some Bag Fees

The conflict in the Gulf region is having a negative impact on many industries worldwide, not least aviation.

Jet fuel prices are rocketing, and airlines are facing huge bills that will ultimately reduce their profitability.

One way to offset the rising cost of fuel is to pass it on to passengers. JetBlue has done exactly that and increased its bag fees.

The good news is that the maximum additional charge you’ll pay per bag is $9, as shown in the table below:

Fees for all additional third, fourth, (or more) bags remain unchanged.

In the grand scheme of things, an increase of between $4 to $9 isn’t going to break the bank.

However, as the crisis continues and costs keep climbing, we can expect to learn of more airlines coming up with ways to pass increased jet fuel costs on to their passengers.

Hot Tip:

As you get a complimentary checked bag when booking a Blue Plus fare, treating yourself to Mint, or holding one of JetBlue’s co-branded credit cards, you’ll only be affected by the increase in fees if you need to check more than one bag or don’t have a complimentary checked bag in your fare.

Final Thoughts

It was only a matter of time before we heard of an airline using ancillary revenue, such as bag fees, to offset the rising cost of jet fuel. If the conflict rages on much longer, we could see even worse repercussions, such as increases in airline ticket prices.
