Marriott Bonvoy and Japan Airlines have launched a new loyalty partnership that makes it easier to earn elite status and enjoy perks across both programs.

By linking your Marriott Bonvoy and JAL Mileage Bank accounts, you’ll be able to receive elite-qualifying rewards, access status match opportunities, and get more value from both your hotel stays and flights.

How does it work? Let’s check it out.

Marriott Bonvoy and JAL Members Can Now Earn Reciprocal Elite Benefits

The biggest addition is that Marriott Bonvoy members will now receive annual JAL FLY ON Points just by linking their accounts — no flight required. Think of FLY ON Points as Japan Airlines’ version of American Airlines Loyalty Points or United’s Premier Qualifying Points. They aren’t redeemable miles but instead count toward earning JAL elite status.

Members can link their accounts here.

Here’s how many FLY ON Points Marriott members will receive each year:

  • Member: 2,000 FLY ON Points
  • Silver Elite: 5,000 FLY ON Points
  • Gold Elite: 10,000 FLY ON Points
  • Platinum Elite: 20,000 FLY ON Points
  • Titanium Elite: 30,000 FLY ON Points
  • Ambassador Elite: 40,000 FLY ON Points

The benefits go both ways. JAL Mileage Bank members now have an easier path to Marriott Bonvoy elite status, with some members eligible for an instant status match and others able to qualify after fewer hotel nights.

Some of the standout benefits include:

  • JAL Sapphire: Instant Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite, plus a fast track to Gold Elite after staying 10 nights in 6 months.
  • JGC Premier: Instant Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite, plus 10,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points after staying 16 nights in 6 months.
  • Diamond and Diamond Metal: Instant Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite, 15,000 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points after 16 nights, and a fast track to Platinum Elite after just 10 nights in 6 months.

Even basic JAL members can earn Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite by staying as few as 4 to 6 nights within 6 months, depending on their JAL status.

Marriott and JAL already let members convert Marriott Bonvoy points into JAL miles. This new partnership goes a step further, making it easier to earn elite status and enjoy perks whether you’re staying at a Marriott hotel or flying with JAL.

Hot Tip:

If you carry the Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, you can enroll for complimentary Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status. That means you’d receive 10,000 JAL FLY ON Points each year after linking your Marriott and JAL accounts — about a a third of the way toward earning JAL Crystal status before you’ve even booked a flight.

Final Thoughts

We’ve seen plenty of airline and hotel partnerships over the years, but this one offers more than just another way to transfer points. By linking Marriott Bonvoy and JAL Mileage Bank, members can earn elite status faster and enjoy perks across both programs.

For most readers, the biggest benefit is the annual deposit of JAL FLY ON Points just for holding Marriott Bonvoy elite status. Even if you only fly JAL once in a while, it’s an easy way to get a head start on earning airline status without ever stepping on a plane.
