There are many ways to earn Air Canada’s Aeroplan points, and one option is to transfer hotel points to Aeroplan among the options that are available.

In general, this isn’t a good idea. However, for a limited time, you can get a 15% transfer bonus from Marriott to Aeroplan, which alters the math slightly.

Let’s look into whether this transfer bonus is worth considering.

Marriott Bonvoy Transfer Bonus to Aeroplan

You can transfer numerous hotel points currencies to Air Canada Aeroplan. These include Choice Privileges, Hilton Honors, and Wyndham Rewards, among others. Unfortunately, the transfer ratios for using your points this way are pretty bad.

It’s also possible to transfer Marriott Bonvoy points to Aeroplan. The transfer ratio is 3:1, and the minimum transfer is 3,000 Marriott points. When you transfer 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points to Aeroplan, you will receive 20,000 Aeroplan points in your account, along with an additional bonus of 5,000 points for the transfer to the airline.

Right now, however, there’s a 15% bonus on transfers from Marriott to Aeroplan. This offer runs from October 1 to October 31, 2024.

Note that the 15% bonus doesn’t apply to the 5,000 bonus points on transfers of 60,000 Marriott points. Thus, with this offer, you’ll earn an extra 3,000 Aeroplan points when transferring 60,000 Marriott points — yielding 28,000 Aeroplan points in the end.

You can transfer points here if you’re interested. And Aeroplan included some examples to help you understand how the transfer bonus works with the everyday bonus.

As this offer is provided by Aeroplan, you won’t see the transfer bonus when logging into your Marriott account to transfer points.

Is It Worth It?

Should you turn 60,000 Marriott points into 28,000 Aeroplan points? It depends.

We value Marriott points at 0.7 cents each and Aeroplan points at 1.5 cents apiece. Using this math, 60,000 Marriott points are worth $420. 28,000 Aeroplan points are worth $420 also.

That means you could get equal value utilizing this transfer bonus, assuming you’re using your points at the average values. However, 2 additional considerations should be highlighted.

First, it’s highly possible to redeem points in either program for more than these values. If you’re doing that, you may want to recalculate the math to see if the transfer bonus is worth it.

Second, if you aren’t using your Marriott Bonvoy points regularly but would love to book some flights, then the bonus could be worthwhile in your situation, regardless of what the numbers indicate.

Bottom Line:

Turning hotel points into airline miles normally results in a loss of value. However, there are situations where it could make sense. Make sure to do the math for your particular situation.

Final Thoughts

Through October 31, 2024, you can get a 15% transfer bonus when sending Marriott Bonvoy points to Aeroplan. Turning hotel points into airline miles isn’t always a good idea, but it can make sense in a few situations. Getting a transfer bonus is an example of those situations, so consider whether this makes sense for you.
