Update:The offer mentioned below has expired and is no longer available.

If you’re a fan of double-dipping your rewards, United Airlines and Marriott Bonvoy have a new offer that can give you both airline miles and hotel points. And we’re not talking about the normal partnership these two offer. Instead, this current offer provides extra rewards for flights and hotel stays for the next 2 months.

While it’s nice to earn double rewards on summer travel, we’ll warn you that the rewards available from this promotion aren’t worth changing your travel plans. However, if this promotion fits with travel you’ll be undertaking anyway, then it’s worth signing up.

Let’s look at the details and who’s eligible.

Marriott Bonvoy and United MileagePlus Dual Earning Promotion

Let’s start with the bad news: Not everyone can participate in this offer. It’s only open to those with Titanium Elite or Ambassador Elite status with Marriott Bonvoy (the top 2 tiers) or those with Gold status and above with United MileagePlus.

For those who are eligible, you must first be registered for the preferred partnership program between Marriott and United. Then, you can register for this promotion on the Marriott site or the United site to earn extra hotel points from flights or extra miles from hotel stays. Here are the key details:

  • Registration is required by August 31, 2024.
  • Travel must begin (either your first flight or check-in at a hotel) by August 31, 2024.
  • Earn 750 bonus Marriott Bonvoy points from a qualifying United itinerary.
  • Earn 500 bonus United miles from a qualifying Marriott stay.
  • If you complete both, earn an extra 350 United miles plus 350 Marriott points.
  • Existing bookings are eligible.
  • Only paid bookings are eligible; miles, points, or points + cash bookings are excluded.
  • Only flights operated by United or United Express qualify.
  • Marriott Bonvoy members who elect to earn airline miles from stays instead of Marriott points are ineligible.

The terms state that it can take up to 6 weeks to receive the bonus points and miles.

Bottom Line:

If you have Marriott Titanium Elite or Ambassador Elite status or United Premier Gold, Premier Platinum, or Premier 1K status, you can register for reciprocal benefits and a status match between these programs. Additionally, you can register for this promotion and begin travel by August 31, 2024, to earn extra bonus points or miles for a limited time.

Is This Promotion Worth It?

We’ll never say no to earning double the rewards on travel. If you’ve got upcoming United flights or Marriott stays, the timing of this offer should make you happy. That said, the value proposition is low for anyone who doesn’t have qualifying travel booked already.

Given the value we find in United miles and Marriott points, you’ll earn about $5.25 worth of Marriott points from a United flight and $6 worth of United miles from a Marriott stay. If you complete both a qualifying flight and qualifying hotel stay, you’ll get an extra $4.20 worth of airline miles plus $2.45 worth of hotel points. That makes the total value available here $17.90 after a flight and a hotel stay. It’s hardly worth changing your travel plans, given what you’d likely spend on a flight and hotel stay.

Moreover, it’s worth highlighting this item in the program terms and conditions:

“Members are eligible to participate in only one (1) dual currency campaign per calendar year. By enrolling in this Promotion, you understand and agree that you will not be eligible to enroll in any future Dual Currency Campaigns with Marriott Bonvoy in 2024.”

In short, if you enroll for this offer, you can’t enroll for another offer in 2024, should one pop up. For reference, the last dual-earning offer we saw from Marriott and United was in 2023, so the likelihood isn’t high that we’ll see 2 offers this year. But there’s still a chance another offer might come along, and you’d be ineligible for that (potentially better) offer if you register for this one.

Final Thoughts

You shouldn’t go out of your way for this promotion, but if it aligns with your travel plans, United Airlines and Marriott Bonvoy have an offer for extra miles and hotel points through August 31, 2024. The partnership program offered by United and Marriott provides points transfers, reciprocal elite status, and more. And for a limited time, you’ll get extra rewards during summer travel, assuming you pay for it and have eligible elite status.
