Miami International Airport (MIA) is set to get a new concourse, known as Concourse K, which will bring 6 new gates to the South Florida airport as part of a larger, multi-billion-dollar investment in the airport.

“The launch of Concourse K will not only increase capacity and create thousands of new jobs but also reinforce MIA’s role as a premier Global Gateway. … [W]e are making visionary, future-ready investments that will build a stronger, more vibrant airport—one that uplifts our community, welcomes the world, and powers our economy into the future,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

Let’s take a look at all the details.

Miami International Will Get a New Concourse in 2029

The Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners approved plans to construct a brand-new concourse at Miami International Airport (MIA), an investment of almost $601 million, and part of a larger modernization plan for the airport with an estimated price tag of $9 billion.

The first new concourse at MIA since 2007, Concourse K will replace the aging Concourse G, which was constructed in 1957. It will bring 6 new gates, a ground support equipment maintenance facility, an aircraft apron and jet-fuel hydrant system, 2 new baggage make-up carousels, and upgrades to the existing baggage-handling system that will connect the Central and South terminals.

Construction on the Concourse K project is supposed to begin this summer and is scheduled to be completed in 2029, though it’s anyone’s guess whether this timeline will remain intact as the project gets underway.

The new concourse and its associated improvements to airport infrastructure have been designed with expansion in mind. MIA handled 56 million passengers and more than 3 million tons of cargo in 2024, but the airport aims to handle a whopping 77 million annual passengers and 5 million tons of cargo by 2040.

The airport’s press release includes a short video (watch on YouTube) that illustrates what the new concourse will look like and where it’ll be situated in relation to the current airport footprint. Not much else is known regarding which airlines will operate from the new concourse, whether there will be space inside it dedicated to lounges, or whether or not it will feature an airside connection to the rest of the airport’s terminals.

What we do know, however, is that MIA is in desperate need of modernization. It’s generally regarded as one of the worst airports in the country for passenger experience — and much of that is due to its aging facilities and the traffic getting into and out of the airport. This new concourse can’t come soon enough for the airport.

Final Thoughts

Miami International Airport has announced the construction of an all-new terminal, scheduled to open in 2029. We hope the airport can stick to that timeline, because it desperately needs improvement. Fortunately, the Concourse K project is part of a much larger investment in the airport, so hopefully we’ll learn of some additional exciting projects sooner rather than later.
