American Airlines is the largest carrier at Miami International Airport (MIA), where it operates a large hub offering flights to almost every corner of the globe, with a particular focus on the Caribbean and Latin America.

However, the airport has been lambasted for years as being severely outdated and for providing a subpar passenger experience.

Recently, though, the airport has embarked on a massive modernization and improvement project, to the tune of $12 billion. It will bring much-needed updates, including a just-announced expansion of Concourse D, which should be a big improvement for flyers.

Let’s take a look at the details.

MIA Concourse D Expansion

Miami International Airport (MIA) and American Airlines have announced a terminal expansion that will center on Concourse D — and more specifically, the gate D60 area.

For anyone who’s flown through Miami before, gate D60 is significant because right now, “gate D60” refers to an area dedicated primarily to American Eagle regional jets. It’s not just 1 gate, either. It’s essentially a holding area that leads to numerous gates, accessible via partially covered outdoor walkways.

It has a reputation of being quite a mess, and travelers have long dreaded using these gates. Now, though, plans are in place to fix all of this, thanks to an extension of the concourse, known as the North Terminal West Extension, which will add 17 dedicated gates.

In addition to the new gates, the expansion will feature a modern design with plenty of natural light, an expanded baggage system, new shopping and dining spaces, and more. The airport says it will provide more capacity for regional jets and will be equipped to handle international arrivals in the future.

Construction is slated to begin in 2027, with a scheduled completion date sometime in 2030. But with practically all construction projects these days, expect delays.

While the construction itself will cause even more headaches for flyers, the end result will be an enormous improvement compared to the current setup. Right now, the design is terribly inefficient, and if the weather isn’t perfect, it’s immensely frustrating for passengers.

Once the expansion is built, passengers will be able to remain inside and board aircraft via true jet bridges.

Hot Tip:

There’s plenty more happening at MIA. Construction is underway for the brand-new Concourse K, and American Airlines is planning an all-new Flagship Lounge and an expanded Admirals Club for the airport.

Final Thoughts

Miami International Airport is getting another much-needed fix, though don’t expect the Concourse D expansion to be done any time soon. When it is, though, passengers flying in and out on American Eagle regional jets can expect a far better experience. We’ll continue to update this story as we learn more about the project.
