ITA Airways, Italy’s flag carrier, has been in the news a lot lately as it transitions from the SkyTeam alliance to rival Star Alliance. Now, the airline is offering a status match to its Volare frequent flyer program, which can get you elite benefits on several SkyTeam carriers. Those benefits will last at least until the end of 2025, before ITA officially joins Star Alliance.

If you haven’t applied for a status match with ITA’s Volare in the past, know that elite members of 9 airlines, mostly in the Oneworld alliance, including American, are eligible this time around.

Here’s what you’ll need to do to match your status, along with a look at the benefits you’ll get as a result.

Matching Your Status to ITA’s Volare Program

This is just the latest installment of ITA’s status match, which we’ve seen a few times before. ITA Airways’ current offer runs through June 10, 2025.

To be eligible, you can’t live in Italy and must be a member of ITA Airways’ Volare loyalty program, which you can join here. You also must not have taken part in any previous Volare status match promotions. Once logged in, you’ll have the option to request a status match within your account:

You’ll also need airline elite status above the basic level in one of the 9 eligible programs. You’ll have to submit a photo of your original airline’s frequent-flyer card (or a screenshot from your member area on the original airline’s website or app) and a photo or screenshot of your ID or passport.

Once the application has been verified, status in the Volare program will be awarded and recognized by ITA Airways systems within 60 days from the date of the application.

Once your status has been matched, you’ll have your status through December 31, 2025. Applications must be received by June 10.

The table below details which elite status levels in which airlines will be matched to a corresponding Volare status:

Status Match Benefits

As of April 30, ITA will no longer be a member of SkyTeam, but thanks to bilateral agreements with some of the alliance’s airlines, you can still receive reciprocal benefits when flying with some SkyTeam members, such as Delta, Air France, or KLM. Those benefits will last until the matched status does.

Unfortunately for U.S.-based flyers, benefits with Delta do not include lounge access, but you’ll get that with other airlines known for great lounges, like Virgin Atlantic. The list of benefits is as follows:

  • Air France (also including access to Air France lounges for Volare Premium Club status and above, no companions allowed)
  • Delta Air Lines (no lounge access)
  • KLM (also including access to KLM lounges for Volare Premium Club status and above, no companions allowed)
  • Middle East Airlines (also including access to MEA lounges for Volare Premium Club status and above, no companions allowed)
  • Saudia (no lounge access)
  • Virgin Atlantic (also including access to Virgin Atlantic lounges for Volare Premium Club status and above, no companions allowed)
Hot Tip:

Frequent flyers with Delta Air Lines should know that beginning May 1, 2025, there will be changes to how you earn SkyMiles and Medallion Qualification Dollars on ITA Airways flights.

These are the benefits you can expect from the various tiers of the Volare program when flying ITA:

Club Plus

  • Business class check-in, priority boarding, priority luggage, and additional baggage allowance
  • Free seat selection in the “Club” area of the aircraft
  • 10% points bonus per euro spent

Club Premium

  • All benefits of Club Plus, as well as lounge access and access to fast-track airport security lanes
  • 20% points bonus per euro spent

Club Executive

  • All benefits of Club Plus and Club Premium
  • 30% points bonus per euro spent
  • Guest privileges at lounges
  • Free checked golf equipment

Earlier this year, Lufthansa acquired 41% of ITA Airways. Shortly after, ITA joined the Lufthansa Group and began participating in the Miles & More program with other Lufthansa Group airlines. There’s also a targeted status match offer available right now to Lufthansa Miles&More elite status for ITA Volare elite members.

Next year, ITA will join Star Alliance, and those agreements with individual SkyTeam carriers will be rescinded.

Final Thoughts

Status matches are a great opportunity to further leverage elite status gained by spending time and money with another airline.

There is no downside to, or cost for, applying to this particular one. If you do, you could get ITA Volare status through the end of 2025 — and consequently, benefits including lounge access on some major SkyTeam carriers that ITA partners with.

The status from this match is a bit short-lived, as it is only valid through the end of the year, but if you have a status with one of the 9 eligible airlines, this could be a worthwhile use of your time.
