To celebrate the Fourth of July and recognize the commitment and sacrifice of this nation’s service members, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has announced several new initiatives.

Here’s what you need to know.

TSA Announces New Military Benefits

TSA and its TSA PreCheck enrollment partners — CLEAR, IDEMIA, and Telos — will discount TSA PreCheck enrollment fees by $25 for spouses of military and uniformed service members.

In addition, TSA will waive TSA PreCheck enrollment fees altogether for Gold Star family members — those who have lost a family member who was serving the U.S. in combat.

Eligible service members and Gold Star family members can enroll at this link.

“This Independence Day and beyond, TSA reaffirms its commitment to ease travel for the military community through its TSA PreCheck program by providing it free to Gold Star families, discounting it for military spouses and creating expedited lanes for service members,” said TSA Acting Administrator Ha Nguyen McNeill.

To raise awareness of the initiative, the TSA and its partners will hold enrollment drives near military sites nationwide to make it easier for those eligible to take advantage of these offers.

Also, the TSA announced in a press release that it will install expedited processing in dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes for military members at select U.S. airports close to major military sites. Measures could include dedicated screening lanes or the ability to skip the line, which would cut down on waiting times and create a more seamless experience for eligible service members.

Hot Tip:

Military personnel and civilian employees at the Department of Defense (DOD) can get TSA PreCheck for free. When booking travel, simply input your DOD ID number in the Known Traveler Number (KTN) field.

What Is TSA PreCheck?

TSA PreCheck is a trusted traveler program run entirely by the TSA and allows low-risk travelers who are approved to complete an expedited screening process at more than 200 airports in the U.S.

The most noticeable perk of TSA PreCheck may be access to dedicated security lanes where you can leave your shoes on when passing through the security checkpoint. Additional benefits include the ability to leave on light outerwear, jackets, and belts, and keep laptops and small liquids in your bag.

Several credit cards offer TSA PreCheck statement credits, reimbursing the application fee.

Final Thoughts

The TSA is showing its appreciation for the thousands of military members and their families this Fourth of July by offering a number of new benefits, including discounted or waived enrollment fees for TSA PreCheck and expedited screening at select airports.
