Marriott is expanding its Protea Hotels brand with 2 new hotels in Angola and South Africa.

Let’s take a look at this exciting news from Marriott.

Marriott’s Growth in Southern Africa

Here’s a look at both properties:

  • Protea by Marriott Luanda: This is the debut of the Protea brand in Angola. The hotel has 84 guest rooms and suites, with amenities such as a rooftop bar, an all-day restaurant, and an outdoor pool.
  • Protea by Marriott Pretoria Hatfield: This hotel has 203 guest rooms and suites. Amenities include a restaurant, a bar, and 5 meeting spaces.

The 2 hotels come on the 40th anniversary of the Protea Hotels by Marriott brand. Protea is one of the largest hotel brands in Africa. Its hotels can be found in 60 hotels across 9 countries, including Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.

“What better way to commemorate this milestone than by further strengthening Protea Hotels’ legacy with our first hotel in Angola and the ongoing expansion of the brand in South Africa,” said Sandra Schulze-Potgieter, vice president of premium and select brands, Europe, Middle East, and Africa. “Both properties will combine contemporary comfort with a deep appreciation for local culture and heritage, offering guests a unique and enriching stay.”

Booking Protea by Marriott Luanda and Pretoria Hatfield

Protea by Marriott Luanda and Protea by Marriott Pretoria Hatfield are now open for guests. Both hotels participate in the Marriott Bonvoy loyalty program, which allows guests to earn and redeem points during their stay.

Rates at Protea by Marriott Luanda start at $150 per night or just 5,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night this fall. The low redemption rates make this a great sweet spot option if you’re trying to earn (or maintain) elite status.

Cash rates at the Protea Hotel Pretoria Hatfield are even cheaper, starting at just $45 per night this fall. However, we don’t see any award availability for this property yet.

Hot Tip:

Marriott Bonvoy points are extremely easy to earn. That’s thanks to transfer partners American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards, which transfer to Marriott Bonvoy at a 1:1 ratio. Both programs (usually Amex) will occasionally run transfer bonuses where you can earn even more points.

Final Thoughts

Two new Marriott Bonvoy hotels have opened in Southern Africa, and they are an absolute steal with cash or points. This is excellent news for travelers, who will have more options to earn and redeem their points in Africa. We hope to see more growth on the continent in the future!
