Qantas is preparing to usher in a new era of ultra-long-haul travel with its long-awaited Project Sunrise flights. While we have known about the project for some time, details on award pricing were unclear— that is, until now.

However, passengers hoping to skip the traditional stopover between Australia and Europe will need to pay a premium for the convenience.

Here’s everything we know so far.

What Is Project Sunrise?

Project Sunrise is one of the aviation industry’s most ambitious long-haul initiatives, designed to eliminate stopovers on Australia’s iconic “Kangaroo Route” to Europe.

With Project Sunrise, Qantas will introduce the world’s longest nonstop commercial flights, connecting Sydney and Melbourne directly with London and New York. Qantas will use specially configured Airbus A350-1000ULR aircraft.

Project Sunrise Award Pricing

From October 2027, Qantas will operate daily nonstop flights between Sydney and London, with tickets going on sale early next year.

According to Qantas International CEO Cam Wallace, the airline plans to price the flights at approximately 20% above the cost of current 1-stop services via Singapore or Perth.

Fortunately, frequent flyers will also be able to redeem Qantas Points for Project Sunrise flights. Qantas Frequent Flyer award pricing is expected to mirror current long-haul redemption bands, with one-way Classic Reward seats costing:

  • 58,900 in economy class
  • 113,900 in premium economy
  • 151,800 in business class
  • 227,800 points in first class

While those redemption rates are steep, particularly in premium cabins, they could still represent excellent value considering the cash fares Qantas plans to charge for the world’s longest nonstop flights.

Of course, award space will be difficult to come by, especially for travelers looking to experience the airline’s flagship nonstop service in business or first class. Additionally, demand for these nonstop ultra-long-haul routes will be immense, likely reducing award availability.

Final Thoughts

For points and miles enthusiasts, there’s some good news as Project Sunrise nears its anticipated 2027 debut.

Qantas has confirmed that Project Sunrise flights will be available to book using Qantas Points, with award pricing expected to align with the airline’s existing long-haul Classic Reward chart — though at 20% higher rates for the nonstop convenience.

Qantas is betting that the appeal of flying directly between Australia and Europe will outweigh the premium redemption costs.
