You can now directly redeem Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles for Hawaiian Airlines flights. This comes months after the 2 airlines had their merger officially approved by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and Department of Transportation (DOT).

The 2 airlines will eventually have a combined loyalty program. Until then, Mileage Plan and HawaiianMiles operate as separate programs. That said, you can freely move miles between the 2 programs until the new combined program launches.

But is booking Hawaiian flights with Alaska miles a good deal? Here’s what you need to know before you book your flights.

You Can Now Book Hawaiian Flights With Alaska Miles

As mentioned, you can now book Hawaiian Airlines flights with Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan miles. These flights are priced based on Alaska’s award chart for its own flights, not its partner award chart.

This is the latest step forward in the Alaska-Hawaiian merger. Hawaiian flights are bookable on Alaska’s website; there’s no need to call in. Head to Alaska’s website, input your desired flight details, and click the “use miles” button to search for an Alaska award flight.

You can book all Hawaiian routes with Alaska miles, including flights to and from Asia. You also can mix Hawaiian and Alaska flights on a single itinerary.

Should You Book Hawaiian Flights With Alaska Miles?

Just because you can book Hawaiian flights with Alaska miles doesn’t mean you should always do so. Remember, you can freely transfer miles between Mileage Plan and HawaiianMiles for the time being, and sometimes costs fewer miles to book with one over the other.

For example, some long-haul flights price lower when using HawaiianMiles, like this flight from New York-Kennedy (JFK) to Pago Pago (PPG) via Honolulu (HNL) costs 115,000 miles with Hawaiian.

Conversely, it costs 164,000 miles with Alaska.

That said, you can often get better deals when you book with Alaska instead of Hawaiian. This economy class flight from Seattle (SEA) to Honolulu (HNL) costs 17,142 miles through Hawaiian.

It costs just 15,000 miles with Alaska.

Likewise, this flight from Long Beach (LGB) to Honolulu (HNL) is slightly cheaper with Alaska miles. You’ll pay 11,428 with Hawaiian.

It’s just 10k with Alaska.

It’s a mixed bag. Most flights cost a similar amount of miles, but you could save a small amount when going with 1 program over the other. Check before you book to make sure you’re getting the best deal.

Final Thoughts

Alaska and Hawaiian will eventually integrate operations and loyalty programs, and adding Hawaiian Airlines award tickets to Alaska Mileage Plan is the latest step in that process.

However, until the systems are fully integrated, cross-reference the cost of booking with Alaska miles and Hawaiian miles. You could save miles while the programs run on separate award charts for now.
