Hawaiian Airlines has a fairly standard baggage policy with fees that are pretty average for checked bags ($25 to $30) when compared to other major airlines. However, Hawaiian’s overweight fees seem to come in a bit cheaper than the average.

Fun Fact: Hawaiian Airlines has a great little exclusion for bringing fresh papaya and pineapple back home with you. Must be that “Aloha Spirit” …

Hawaiian Airlines Carry-on Allowance

1 personal item: FREE
1 standard carry-on bag: FREE

Size and Weight Restrictions

  • Personal: Size and weight undisclosed, but Hawaiian states that the item must be small enough to fit under the seat in front of you
  • Standard: 22 x 14 x 9 inches (55.9 x 35.5 x 22.9 cm) and 25 pounds (11.34 kg)

Lap Infant Carry-on Policy

  • The infant does not receive a carry-on allowance
  • Passengers are permitted to bring a car seat onboard and use it on the plane if there is a free seat (subject to the travel safety seat policy)
  • Strollers will be checked at the gate free of charge; small, collapsible strollers may be carried on provided the item meets all of the standard size/weight restrictions of a carry-on bag

Hawaiian Airlines Checked Baggage Allowance

All checked bags must adhere to a max weight of 50 pounds (23 kg) and max linear dimensions of 62 inches (157 cm).

SCROLL FOR MORE

It’s worth noting that Hawaiian Airlines allows passengers traveling on the same booking to pool their baggage. If you exceed the sum of the maximum individual allowances, then excess baggage fees would apply.

Additional/Excess Baggage Fees

Hawaiian Airlines will accept 1 pre-packaged box of papayas or pineapples, per paid passenger, free of charge (subject to space availability) on flights departing from Hawaii to North America. The box must not exceed 10 pounds in weight and must be pre-agriculture inspected.

Can I Prepay for Baggage?

Hawaiian Airlines does allow passengers to prepay luggage online when they check-in from 24 hours before the flight departure.

Passengers need to visit the Manage Flights area of the website and select Check-in Online where they can pay any baggage fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big can a carry-on bag be on Hawaiian Airlines?

Hawaiian Airlines allows passengers to bring a standard piece of carry-on that must not exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches and must not weigh over 25 pounds. A personal item is also allowed but Hawaiian does not disclose any size restrictions.

How much is a checked bag on Hawaiian Airlines?

For the main cabin, Hawaiian charges $25 for the first bag, $35 for the second bag, and $50 to $100 for 3+ bags. This excludes flights to/from North America where the first bag is $30 and the second bag $40. For first class and international flights, the first 2 bags are included within the standard ticket price, with 3+ bags costing $50 to $150.

Is a backpack a personal item on Hawaiian Airlines?

Yes, Hawaiian would consider a backpack as your personal item as long as it is comparable in size to a handbag, laptop bag or briefcase (so we’re not talking a 60L backpack, here!)

What is the baggage allowance on Hawaiian Airlines?

Checked luggage must be added to your booking if flying Hawaiian in the main cabin. The allowance for the bags that you add to your booking would be 50 pounds (23 kg) and max linear dimensions of 62 inches (157 cm). The first 2 bags are free for first class passengers and international flights.

How much does Hawaiian Airlines charge for overweight baggage?

With Hawaiian Airlines, checked baggage that exceeds 50 pounds (23 kg) will be subject to excess fees. For bags that weigh 51 to 70 pounds (23 to 32 kg) the fee is $35 within Hawaii and $50 for all other routes (excluding Australia and New Zealand). Bags 71 to 100 pounds (32 to 45 kg) will be charged $70 within Hawaii, $200 between Hawaii and North America and $400 for international flights (excluding Australia, New Zealand, and Tahiti where bags of this weight are not accepted).
