Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) sure has been in the news a lot lately, now that the airline left Star Alliance and joined SkyTeam. The latest announcement is a codeshare agreement with Virgin Atlantic.

Here’s what travelers should know about the latest development between these 2 airlines.

SAS and Virgin Atlantic Sign Codeshare Agreement

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) left Star Alliance for SkyTeam just last month — in September of 2024. Since then, the airline has been busy, laying out new award charts, making its flights available for award bookings with Flying Blue and Delta SkyMiles, adding new routes to the U.S., and getting to know its new friends.

We already saw SAS sign a codeshare with Delta. The latest move is a codeshare agreement with Virgin Atlantic, based in the U.K.

As of October 7, 2024, the 2 airlines will provide connections via London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR) for SAS passengers to continue onward with Virgin Atlantic flights. Likewise, passengers traveling on Virgin Atlantic flights from North America will be able to connect in London and travel onwards with SAS flights to Stockholm, Sweden; Copenhagen, Denmark; and 3 cities in Norway: Oslo, Bergen, and Stavanger.

“We are very pleased to launch this new codeshare partnership with Virgin Atlantic, expanding SAS’s global reach and offering our customers even more travel options to new and exciting destinations such as Barbados, Jamaica, and Antigua, with additional destinations to be introduced later.”

Paul Verhagen, chief commercial officer at SAS

This new codeshare agreement also provides opportunities for earning and redeeming. Virgin Atlantic Flying Club and SAS EuroBonus members will be able to earn when flying paid flights with the partner airline. Likewise, you’ll be able to redeem award flights using Virgin Points for SAS flights or SAS EuroBonus Points for Virgin flights.

Additionally, those with elite status will see reciprocal benefits. If you have SAS EuroBonus Gold or Diamond status, you’ll have access to SkyPriority services at London Heathrow. These include perks like priority check-in, priority baggage handling, and early boarding. Flying Club Silver and Gold members will be able to access SAS lounges at Copenhagen Airport (CPH), Oslo Airport (OSL), and Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN).

Bottom Line:

Travelers can now book 1 ticket that has flights operated by both Virgin Atlantic and SAS, making the journey easier. Thanks to an expanded partnership, you can also easily earn and redeem miles on these flights.

Final Thoughts

A codeshare agreement allows airlines to cooperate closely, with each airline able to sell flights operated by a partner airline on its website. SAS and Virgin Atlantic have signed a new codeshare agreement, offering access to additional destinations for each airline’s flyers.
