Of the new destinations, Los Angeles (LAX) is perhaps the most interesting. The transcontinental route is served several times per day by American Airlines, which has a massive presence at CLT.

But Spirit aims to be competitive on the route in terms of pricing, especially for premium seats. For instance, a round-trip ticket in Spirit’s Big Front Seat (akin to domestic first-class) costs just $493 in May.

In comparison, a business-class flight with American Airlines costs over $1,800 for the same dates.

Spirit’s Moves Post-Bankruptcy

It’s been a busy — and certainly interesting — few weeks for Spirit. The budget carrier, best known for its bright-yellow fleet of Airbus A321 jets, recently exited bankruptcy after filing for Chapter 11 protection last year.

“We’re pleased to complete our streamlined restructuring and emerge in a stronger financial position to continue our transformation and investments in the Guest experience,” said Spirit president Ted Christie. “Throughout this process, we’ve continued to make meaningful progress enhancing our product offerings, while also focusing on returning to profitability and positioning our airline for long-term success.”

Spirit emerged from its financial restructuring, turning nearly $1 billion in debt into equity. The airline continued flights during bankruptcy proceedings, and, in recent years, it has sought to shed its low-cost reputation to be more similar to mainline carriers.

Spirit now has several ticket options, including the business-class Big Front Seat. It also offers priority boarding, free snacks for all ticket classes, and access to upgrades for Spirit credit cardholders.
