The low-cost competition in Philly is about to heat up.
Spirit Airlines is doubling down on Philadelphia (PHL) by adding 7 new routes from the Pennsylvania airport in spring 2022.
“Philadelphia has been a great partner of Spirit Airlines for a long time, and we’re thankful to the airport team for enabling this opportunity to add many more popular, nonstop destinations for our guests,” said Matt Klein, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Spirit Airlines.
The new destinations are a mixture of beach destinations in the Caribbean and popular vacation spots in the U.S. — let’s find out more.
Spirit’s New Routes from Philadelphia
The 7 new routes will be to Aguadilla (BQN), Houston (IAH), Montego Bay (MBJ), Nashville (BNA), New Orleans (MSY), Oakland (OAK), and Punta Cana (PUJ).
“This expansion is particularly exciting because of the variety of destinations stretching from the Pacific Coast, to popular spots in the Southern US, and 3 new options for Caribbean getaways,” said Klein.
New Orleans (MSY) will be the first of the 7 new routes, which will start on February 16, 2022, with daily flights.
The next slew of inaugural flights will take place in May 2022.
On May 11, 2022, Spirit will commence its Philadelphia (PHL) to Houston (IAH) and Nashville (BNA) routes with daily flights.
And finally, on May 18, 2022, daily flights to Oakland (OAK), 4 times weekly flights to Punta Cana (PUJ), and 3 times weekly flights to Montego Bay (MBJ) will start from Philadelphia (PHL).
Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is a long-time American Airlines strong-hold and hub airport, meaning Spirit could have its work cut out on some of the overlapping routes.
However, Spirit’s ultra-low-cost business model is likely to attract bargain-seeking vacationers, rather than those who appreciate the luxuries and comforts of flying a full-service carrier like American.
Rival ultra-low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines also has a strong presence in Philly, again, with some overlapping routes. This is where the competition will definitely heat up. Who knows, we may even witness a price-war that could drive the already low fares down even further!
