Hot Tip:

Although these ideas might actually help with boarding and in-flight etiquette, this article was just an April Fools’ Day joke!

Spirit Airlines announced it will roll out a new program to improve passenger behavior at the gate and in the cabin.

The initiative, which the airline is calling the Passenger Etiquette Program (PEP), will focus on reducing two of the most common frustrations in air travel: crowded boarding areas and in-flight etiquette disputes.

Spirit says the goal is simple: make flying less stressful for passengers and crew.

Let’s take a look at the details.

Dynamic Boarding Penalties for Gate Crowd Control

Today, April 1, 2026, Spirit Airlines will begin rolling out a new penalty system to help reduce the number of passengers who crowd the boarding area before their group is called.

Passengers — referred to by the airline as “gate lice” — who attempt to board before their assigned group is called may be automatically reassigned to the last boarding group.

The airline says that the following behaviors may trigger a boarding penalty:

  • Attempting to board before your group is called
  • Standing directly in front of the boarding lane before boarding begins
  • Blocking the scanner while waiting for your group

Passengers flagged by gate agents may be assigned to a new boarding group labeled “Group Z,” which boards after all other passengers and cargo.

Spirit Introduces ‘Yellow Cards’ for Inflight Etiquette Violations

In addition to improved passenger behavior on the ground, Spirit wants to encourage better behavior in the air. Once onboard, the flight crew will have a new tool to address common passenger complaints.

Inspired by the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, flight attendants will now be able to issue yellow cards to passengers who violate inflight etiquette guidelines.

Examples of yellow card offenses include:

  • Placing multiple items in the overhead bin when space is limited
  • Taking both armrests while seated in a middle seat
  • Removing shoes and placing feet near another passenger’s seat
  • Watching videos without headphones

Passengers who receive 2 yellow cards during a flight could receive a red card, which may include additional penalties.

Penalties for repeat offenders include:

  • Being moved to a middle seat for the remainder of the flight
  • Loss of early boarding privileges on future flights
  • A temporary restriction on overhead bin access

Spirit flight crew says that this new policy could help address some of the most common issues they deal with since they “spend a lot of time playing referee, anyway.”

Bottom Line:

Spirit says this policy is intended to encourage cooperation among passengers, not to punish them.

Final Thoughts

As entertaining as some of these initiatives sound, this story is part of our annual April Fools’ Day tradition here at Upgraded Points.

Although we’re not opposed to these changes, don’t expect any yellow cards to be handed out on your next Spirit flight!
