Florida-based low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines has announced that it will soon begin service to its seventh airport in California: San Jose (SJC).

“We’re excited to provide More Go and boost competition with the introduction of our ultra-low fares and Spirit’s Signature Service in the heart of Silicon Valley,” said John Kirby, vice president of network planning at Spirit Airlines.

Let’s dig into all the details of this exciting development for the Bay Area airport.

At an event on February 16, 2023, at Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport, Spirit said that it would begin flying from the airport as of June of this year and unveiled the first group of destinations that the airline will serve: Dallas-Ft. Worth (DFW), Las Vegas (LAS), and San Diego (SAN).

Spirit won’t have a monopoly on any of these routes — each is served already by 1 or more carriers. But for flyers who prefer using SJC, the hope is that Spirit’s entry on these routes could bring prices down.

Here’s a look at the new routes along with their start dates and frequency:

When these flights begin, San Jose will become the seventh destination in California for Spirit, joining Burbank (BUR), Los Angeles (LAX), Oakland (OAK), Orange County (SNA), Sacramento (SMF), and San Diego (SAN).

Spirit first entered the California market via Los Angeles more than 2 decades ago and since then has grown to provide 55 daily flights from the 6 (soon to be 7) airports it serves across the state.

Low Introductory Fares

To celebrate the introduction of these new routes, Spirit’s offering some great deals on tickets:

  • San Jose-Dallas-Ft. Worth: from $89 each way
  • San Jose-Las Vegas: from $39 each way
  • San Jose-San Diego: from $59 each way

These introductory prices are valid for travel between June 7, 2023, and August 2, 2023, and tickets must be purchased at least 14 days in advance.

Final Thoughts

Spirit Airlines will add a new destination to its route map when it begins flights to San Jose, California, this summer. For flyers, it hopefully means lower fares thanks to more competition on existing routes. And for the airport, San Jose hopes that Spirit’s low fares will bring in more business, as it lost numerous routes — and airlines altogether — as a result of the pandemic.

Here’s to a bright future in store for Spirit Airlines in San Jose!
