Embattled low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines is making a customer-friendly change for those who hold its co-branded credit card.

Primary holders of the Free Spirit® Travel More World Elite Mastercard® can get up to 2 free checked bags on Spirit flights booked with the card.

“With [2] free checked bags, primary cardholders can enjoy more of what they love, including excellent value, great perks, and an elevated travel experience,” said Rana Ghosh, senior vice president and chief commercial officer at Spirit Airlines.

Let’s take a look at the details of this change that will be sure to please Spirit flyers.

Free Checked Bags for Spirit Cardholders

Spirit Airlines is in the middle of its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy since 2024, and it’s working hard to change its route network and service model to ensure profitability if and when it emerges from this current bankruptcy.

Now, it’s making a change that will certainly please its Free Spirit World Elite cardholders: Primary members can now check up to 2 bags for free on Spirit flights booked via the airline’s website or its mobile app (iOS, Android).

Primary cardholders will receive up to 2 free checked bags up to 50 pounds each, and the perk is eligible for special items such as golf clubs, skis, and snowboards, so long as they meet the airline’s standard requirements for checked baggage.

This addition to the Free Spirit World Elite card increases its value proposition significantly. If you don’t have the card, you’ll pay from $54 to $99 for the first checked bag, depending on when you pay for it. And if you have a second, you’ll be charged between $74 and $101.

The Free Spirit World Elite card charges a $0 introductory fee for the first year, then $79 thereafter. Looking at that number, you can extract a tremendous amount of value from the checked-bag perk in just a single trip, relative to the card’s annual fee.

In addition to the card’s new checked-bag perk, it offers several other benefits for Spirit flyers, including:

  • Priority boarding
  • Priority check-in, where available
  • 25% rebate on inflight food and beverage purchases when you pay with the card
  • Complimentary space-available upgrades to premium economy and Spirit First

Final Thoughts

Despite it being in Chapter 11 bankruptcy and scaling back, Spirit Airlines is trying desperately to ensure it emerges as a stronger carrier, which includes making customer-friendly changes — like adding 2 free checked bags for those with a Free Spirit World Elite card. This change increases the card’s value proposition significantly and should make flying with Spirit even more affordable for cardholders.
